Mitsubishi Australia sales boom in November

Mitsubishi Motors Australia bounced back in a big way in November, recording record import registrations for the month and growing over the same period last year by 37.3 per cent.

The company registered 7067 units compared to 5148 in November 2013, making it the fifth top-selling brand locally behind Toyota, Hyundai, Mazda and Holden. The company’s growth goes against an overall market drop of 2.2 per cent.

While Mitsubishi has one of the older model line-ups in Australia, is also offers sharp deals across its range that no doubt appeal to value shoppers.

All four of its core volume models experienced substantial growth, led by the ASX small SUV with 1763 registrations, up a massive 133 per cent.

Remarkably, this unassuming crossover was the single biggest selling SUV in Australia last month, beating out regular leaders the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai ix35.

Also showing strong growth was Mitsubishi other compact SUV, the larger Outlander, which managed 1232 deliveries for the month, up 122 per cent — enough to nudge out rivals such as the Nissan X-Trail (1159), but not the CX-5 (1617), Subaru Forester (1595) and Toyota RAV4 (1477).

Interestingly, 46 of these Outlanders sales appear to be of the PHEV plug-in hybrid variant.

The aged Lancer also performed strongly with 897 units, up 150 per cent on the same month last year, ahed of the Subaru Impreza (620, not including the now separated WRX), Honda Civic range (519), Hyundai Elantra (549) and Kia Cerato (525).

Finally, the near-runout Triton managed a combined 2172 deliveries, ahead of the Ford Ranger and second in segment behind the Toyota HiLux.

Mitsubishi’s total figure is made even more interesting given it lost about 800 monthly sales compared to November 2013 given the dramatic fall of the Mirage hatch. The budget city car managed 352 units last month, compared to 1154 in the same month last year.

This precipitous drop was far from limited to the Mirage, with the entire Micro segment falling 54 per cent for the month, taking its whole-year drop to 30 per cent.

Both the Pajero (406) and Challenger (156) experienced minor drops of 6.5 and 11.9 per cent apiece.

MMAL director of sales Greg Cook said: “It’s very pleasing to achieve a record November sales result and record monthly SUV sales in such a challenging market environment”.

“ASX has really hit its stride in the second half of 2014 and we’re pleased the styling and performance upgrades introduced mid-year have proved very popular with buyers.

“Triton continues to be an enduring success for Mitsubishi and November marks another bumper month for our number one vehicle.

“Triton holds a solid market position that we’re hoping to maintain when our more efficient, more powerful and more refined new-generation Triton arrives in the Australian market in 2015.”
