Car sales November 2014 :: winners and losers

Hyundai has shoved Mazda off the 2014 new vehicle sales podium and Mercedes-Benz is on track to boot Honda out of the top 10 with just one month of the year to go.

Official VFACTS sales data to be released today shows the South Korean car maker beat its Japanese rival by almost 500 sales in November (8600 vs 8106 to take a 381-unit lead into December (92,354 vs 91,973).

The ix35 compact SUV (1697) outsold top 10 stalwarts the Volkswagen Golf (1629) and Mazda CX-5 (1617) to claim 10th position in November and join the fourth-placed i30 (2886). Hyundai’s small car claimed a scalp of its own, surging past the Holden Commodore in year-to-date sales to take fourth position overall (28,667 vs 28,194).

Hyundai’s sales are up 3.5 per cent so far this year, while Mazda has fallen 2.8 per cent in a market that’s down 2.2 per cent overall.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is on the brink of becoming the first luxury brand to crack the top 10 for calendar year sales. Following another monster sales month in November where its dealers delivered 3369 new cars (including 817 new C-Classes), the German car maker now trails Honda by just 34 units heading into December (29,206 vs 29,240), and recent results suggest it will overtake the mainstream Japanese brand by year’s end.

Mitsubishi was the other big story of November. Its 7067 sales tally put it fifth ahead of Ford (5843) and saw it leapfrog Nissan into sixth place overall for the year (61,199 vs 60,156).

Mitsubishi’s SUV sales soared to 3557 last month, up a mammoth 85 per cent compared with November 2013. The ASX (1763) was the top selling SUV in the country, and was well supported by the Outlander (1232). The Triton (2182) also edged out the Ford Ranger (2092) to become the second highest selling ute behind the Toyota HiLux (2920).

The race for number one tightened again last month, with the Mazda 3 outselling the Toyota Corolla (3499 vs 3264) to narrow its lead to 679 sales heading into December. The Corolla is looking to go back to back, while the 3 is hoping to reclaim the title it held in 2011 and 2012.

The Big T continues its dominance of the market as a whole, topping November with 15,995 sales to take its yearly tally to 184,486 and within easy reach of 200,000 sales by year’s end.

Though the market will finish down this year compared with last year, 92,232 November sales helped it break through the million barrier, tallying 1,016,421, and putting it on track to once again exceed 1.1 million vehicles sales for the calendar year.

November winners included Audi (1655, up 26.1 per cent), BMW (2001, up 16.3 per cent), Isuzu (1383, up 47.9 per cent), Jeep (2783, up 27.9 per cent), Land Rover (752, up 14.3 per cent), Mini (265, up 42.5 per cent), Peugeot (344, up 38.2 per cent), Porsche (300, up 76.5 per cent) and Renault (1060, up 21.1 per cent).
