Skoda Fabia R5 WRC-2 rally car will debut in Essen

Skoda has taken the wraps off its WRC-2 race car, the Skoda Fabia R5, ahead of its official debut at the Essen motor show this weekend.

As with other cars in the WRC-2 category, the Fabia R5 will be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that's fitted with a 32mm restrictor.

Although Skoda hasn't specified how much power the engine will tuned for, both the Mitsubishi R5, which is based on the Mirage, and the Peugeot 208 R5 produce 209kW from their 1.6-litre turbo motors.

The R5 version of the Fabia will ride on McPherson strut suspension and direct its power to the ground via a five-speed sequential gearbox. Regulations also stipulate that the Fabia R5 weigh at least 1230 kilograms and employ an all-wheel drive system.

Other changes to the R5 include a wider front and rear track, which is accommodated by flared wheel guards and a modified pair of rear doors. Vents and aero fins have been added to the Fabia's bonnet, while a large rear wing protrudes from the top of the vehicle's tailgate.

According to Skoda, the Fabia R5 isn't likely to be ready for the beginning of the 2015 WRC-2 season, with homologation scheduled instead for mid-2015.

When the car is finally ready for the big time, it will take on models based on the Citroen DS3, Ford Fiesta, Mitsubishi Mirage and Peugeot 208.
