Mercedes-AMG confirms ‘green monster’ for production

If you remember the manic Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6, you probably thought to yourself: ‘I wonder if they’ll make a more hardcore four-wheel version of the standard G63 AMG G-Wagen?’.

According to Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers, who spoke exclusively with CarAdvice at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show, there will be a four-wheel-drive version of the Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6 in the near future.

“Soon,” was all Moers said about the car, but that’s clearly enough to assume the car will enter production in 2015.

The G63 6x6 went on sale in select markets in 2013, priced at an eye-watering 379,000 euros ($547,000 at time of publishing), powered by a 5.5-litre twin turbocharged V8 enigne.

Its power output is 400kW/760Nm, with power sent to four (rather than six) wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Changes to the car over the standard G63 are expected to include broad fender flares, new side skirts and bumpers and new wheels - probably 20-inch rims with new all-terrain tyres – the 6x6 rode on 37-inch rubber.

The 6x6 (pictured above) also rode on a raised suspension setup that is likely to be carried over to the new 4x4 version, with 460 millimetres of ground clearance (the standard G-Wagen has 205mm of clearance to its underbody.

It is expected the car will carry over the same equipment levels as the existing G63 AMG, which, in Australia, includes leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, digital TV and radio (DAB+), adaptive cruise control and blind-spot assist.

Mercedes-Benz Australia manager of public relations and product communications, Jerry Stamoulis, said there is no information on the vehicle at this point in time, though he stated that "we would be open to making another variant in the G-Class range if it worked for our market".
