2015 Mazda CX-5 details revealed

Australia’s best selling SUV has been given an update for 2015 both inside and out with the Mazda CX-5 making its debut at the Los Angeles auto show today.

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 update introduces moderate changes to the exterior while the interior benefits from improvements throughout the cabin.

From the outside it’ll remain a challenge to tell the updated CX-5 apart from its predecessor. The front grille now features five horizontal slats, while the headlights are sharper and employ a new-generation of adaptive LEDs, the daytime running light get a fresh look, and the tail-lights gain a new LED lighting signature.

There is a set of new 19-inch wheels for the higher-spec models, while Mazda will bring the Mazda 3’s Sonic Silver Metallic and Titanium Flash Mica colours to the 2015 CX-5 range.

On the inside the CX-5 gets more supportive front and rear seats (the length of rear seat cushion has been extended) as well as more sound insulation for a quieter cabin, with a claimed 10 per cent cabin noise reduction at highway speeds.

Mazda has upgraded to an electric parking brake, freeing up space in the floor console.

The upholstery continues to be available in black leather and black and sand fabric, and is now also offered in white leather. The Japanese company has also changed the fabric material for the centre of the seats, and offers three decorative trims for the instrument panel, including aluminum-look, metallic and piano black surfaces.

Mazda has modified the functionality and usability of the CX-5’s infotainment system inline with the new Mazda 3 and Mazda 2, introducing the MZD Connect system that puts greater emphasis on reducing the driver’s workload for information processing.

The updated system also now allows better tethering of internet and social services from smartphones.

Front door pockets, a console box, floor console cup holders and increased capacity in front of the shift knob are also welcome additions to the updated CX-5.

Mechanically, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 makes use of a new structure for the front and rear dampers and a new shape for the front lower arms. Mazda has chosen new low-viscosity synthetic oil for all-wheel-drive models, which the company says helps save fuel.

On the safety front the CX-5 gets a wide range of upgrades to its active systems, including an evolution of its current systems to detect vehicles and objects at the rear of the vehicle in the case of unintended acceleration.

New technologies available on the top-spec models include Mazda's radar cruise control (MRCC), lane keep assist system (LAS) that can now help steer the CX-5 in the right direction, smart brake support (SBS) that automatically brakes the car in the case of a collision and no driver input, and driver attention alert (DAA), which keeps an eye on the driver and recommends rest breaks.

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 will be available in Australian showrooms from early 2015. Prices are expected to remain relatively unchanged.
