New Vehicle Sales Figures for May
June 3, 2009 by Alborz Fallah
With the market shrinking worldwide, Australia’s new vehicle sales for May dropped a further 14.9 per cent (13,201 vehicles – compared to same time last year) for a total of 75,439 cars, SUVs and commercials.
However on a positive side of things, there was an increase in business purchases to help inject some confidence into the market. Business buyer sales were only down 7.2 per cent on a year ago. Additionally, Australians bought 11,476 more vehicles in May compared to April.
“The May figures provide a tangible indication that new vehicle sales have stabilised and indeed there are even grounds to suggest we may see signs of improvement in coming months,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.
The FCAI believes “the Federal Government’s business tax break is proving extremely effective, providing a much needed boost to vehicle sales and stimulating economic activity.
As it stands now, year-to-date 352,374 new vehicles have been sold which is down 19.2 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The winners are Toyota with 15,481 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 9,177 and Ford with 8,440.

Can we see a table like Autoblog use showing all brands and their sales for the month?
Then we can see the raw data for ourselves
*Alborz* – Of course : http://www.caradvice.com.au/31.....-may-2009/
Interestingly Ford is about to overtake the ailing GM Holden brand.
Given GM’s bankruptcy, who would be stupid enough to put their money on the line and buy a GM Holden??
I agree Super, its so bloody annoying how CA only shows the top 3 makes….which ofcourse is GM Holden, Ford and Toyota.
Millatime,
And most of the Ford increase in market share is at the expense of Toyota.
Ford deserve to move ahead of Holden, IMHO Ford have the best product range of the top three at the moment by a long way
Brett
Yes, and it’s significant that the people walking out of Toyota showrooms are – wisely – not heading for GM Holden, but into their local Ford and also Mazda showrooms.
I wouldnt say that Holden are completely out of trouble yet, Although Holden CEO has been talking up Holdens survival, GM is still to go through the US court system. The courts findings may have a different future for Holden.
I’ll support that call too Super, Autoblog make their information on sales figures for each month easy to access, whilst also being simple to read
A chart such as this would defently add to CA’s appeal
Actually referring to Autoblog, Ford was No 1 in the USA followed by Toyota and Chevrolet. Hopefully we will see the same here!
Shane,
But by company it’s unfortunately still GM (20.5% market share) in front, followed by Ford (16.8%) then Toyota (16.5)
SteveH…….I totally agree. I hope the car buying public start to realise what good cars Ford have at the moment, especially the FG ……….hopefully the tide will turn in Fords direction because they have the best or lose to it, car in every class………way ahead of anything Holden or Toyota have……….GO FORD
oopppssss ……..was meant to be …….best or close to it………
Yes all the ford product is very good. And people will start to see this,I for the life of me cant under stand how holden have gone all daewoe with there products and i think its coming around to bite them for it to.
Guys here is the full table:

Agree Ford have the best range at present and hopefully Cruze can prove the anti Daewoo lobby wrong and take some sales from Corolla.
This drive away pricing thing is really going to show Toyota up IMO as up until now Toyota new vehicle prices have been a bit a mystery or lucky dip.
Standby for a rebound from Holden for June with the all-new Cruze about to storm the market.
This car will make up the lost sales of Viva and Astra in May.
Hey Ford numb nuts…Holden are playing with ya
You claim Ford has the best range, why does it still trail Holden in sales…LMAO hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Once the all-new Cruze starts selling, it’s bye bye Ford again…hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Poor Ford, guess it’s the shiit service you get at a Ford dealer that’s put people off
yo jack whats a chinese owned and made commodore in 2012 gonna be worth. Could be the VD Comodore.
hahaah
Jack, no really, it’s bye bye GM Daewoo, oops I mean GM Holden, or Daeden, or Holwoo, or maybe it’s Chinese now who the hell know’s…!
Anyway, who honestly would be dumb and stupid enough to spend their hard earned money on a car from a company that probably won’t even exist by Christmas?
If the Chinese buy GM Holden, would they become Holdong?
hey ford fans, Holden are still on top, your argument that your product range is better and deserve to be on top is meaningless… its like a loosing football team saying that you have a better team, maybe you do, but you still lost!
Hey Richo, go Holdong go!
Tai Chi, dim sims, panda bears and Holdong cars
Soon u will recieve a free bag of dim sims with every holden sale. lol
Millatime – must be rough always being on the loosing team… when was the last time the falcon out-sold the commodore again? Let alone Ford out-selling holden? fair while yeah?
Richo,
Ford quite regularly outsell Holden for sales of Australian built vehicles.
I read last month FPV outsold HSV in sedans……..Thats a nice change :)
DesignEngr – ford have two aussie built models compared to holden’s one.. they would bloody well want to outsell them no?
By the way, if you haven’t worked out that all i’m doing is stirring you holden haters up for a bit of a laugh then you really are as silly as you come accross in some of your posts!
Judge a car based on it’s relative merits, not on what badge is on the grill, thats where i’m coming from!
I think Holdens problem Richo is that more and more people are taking your advice and realising that almost all Holdens just don’t measure up to the competition.
Richo says: “ford have two aussie built models compared to holden’s one.. they would bloody well want to outsell them no?”
What is the second “non-Falcon” based model Ford build in Australia Richo? I thought the Aussie assembled Focus is still a little while off…
If you look more realistically at model variants, Holden actually make more. So in reality, Holden should be selling more. IMHO (read MY opinion) Holden sell more than Ford not because of the “superiority” of the product, but more because Holden are brilliant marketers. All the power to them I say if people are gullible enough to fall for SOME of the spin they produce/portray. For example, there are still many people out there who think the Barina/Astra/Viva etc are Australian made. I have met some of them. Whilst Holden don’t go out and SAY they are Australian made, they don’t advertise the fact that they aren’t either. Good marketing I say for us “patriotic” Aussies! This is the opposite to Ford pushing the “German engineered” Focus/Mondeo which when going by sales figures, obviously hasn’t worked.
(PS, I am neither a Ford or Holden lover/hater. Each has it’s place.)
Richo,
Holden: Commodore (inc wagon), Ute, Statesman/Caprice.
Ford: Falcon (inc OLD wagon), Falcon Ute, Territory.
3 vs 3. Looks like a draw to me.
BTW, (lately) Holden have been pushing the VE wagon with extensive advertising and marketing, to the point that they are almost trying to convince people it’s not “just another Commodore”, but a different product.
DesignEngr – the Stateman/Caprice is a low volume vehicle, it was never designed or intended to sell in the same numbers as the Territory, however the profit margins are much higher due to the higher price which is how low volume vehicles become profitable over high volume vehicles.
You can’t compare one range of vehicles to another range of vehicles unless all vehicles in that range have the exact same intended purpose, which in this case they do not.
I believe your trying to be deliberately missleading but I don’t understand why because you and I both know you are trying to compare apples with oranges.
The only thing you can compare is specific model v model, in which case the most logical comparison is commodore v falcon, which sells more again???
Devil’s Advocate – I don’t believe people are as stupid as you make out, people buy cars for a whole range of different reasons, but I’m yet to come accross someone who buys a car without at least driving it first. The car has to drive ok for people on mass to buy it, that’s just obvious mate, otherwise manufacturers wouldn’t bother trying to make cars good now would they!
Richo, What?
We were talking about Australian sales numbers of Australian built cars per manufacturer.
The comment was regarding plant volume, regardless of model nembers/types.
You claimed tha Ford build two “models” and Holden one, yet I clearly pointed out that they build 3 each. What’s missleading about that?
^ In fact if you were to look at VFACTS entries as the guide, each manufacturer has an entry into 3 different categories, therefore 3 ea. Easy, nothing missleading.
Richo,
Statesman is a big fleet seller to government “high rollers” and Limo hire operations. I wouldnt call it a high margin vehicle for that reason.
Oh yeah, How ya been by the way, long time, no speak
Dont know what sales numbers have to do with grading a particular vehicle. All it counts for is manufacturer bragging rights.
When I go shopping I dont ask what MR and MRS Jones bought last week and go the same road, I choose what I think is the better product and what suits my tastes
Hi Andrew
I don’t actually care mate, just stirring up teh Holden haters! People who actually know me know that i’m a mitsubishi man, not a holden man, i’ve only ever owned one holden and it was an astra and i hated it! lol
I just get annoyed with people who hate something they’ve never driven based solely on the fact they don’t like the badge on it. I say the same thing in Ford threads but for some reason everyone has decided I hate fords and only like holdens, whatever, i don’t particularly like either! I just happen to like the current model commodore, but hey i like the current model falcon even more! but whatever I’m defending holdens therefore must be a bogan, you know what its like on this site mate!
