GM says selling Hummer

June 2, 2009 by Alborz Fallah

Update: Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co named as buyer. Revised story coming.

Following General Motors declaring bankruptcy earlier today, the company has now announced it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a buyer for its once strong Hummer brand.

Although most suspected the sale to happen sooner than later, GM says it’s a result of the company’s strategic review of the Hummer brand and its current rebuilding efforts.

Under terms of the MoU, GM will not disclose the identity of the purchaser, however if rumours are anything to go by, it could be a buyer from India. The plan is to have the sale finalised by the end of third quarter of this year.

As part of the condition of sale, the purchaser will secure more than 3000 US jobs in manufacturing, engineering and at Hummer dealerships around the country.

Additionally the new owner will have to “aggressively fund future Hummer product programs”.

With sales of Hummer vehicles slowing in the last 12-18 months, GM’s decision to move away from its “big-is-better” image into a more eco friendly manufacturer is a necessity if the company intends to come back strong.

Troy Clarke, President of GM North America said Hummer’s sale will make GM “into a leaner, more focused, and more cost-competitive automaker”.

The new owner will have an agreement with GM to continue to contract assemble the H3 and H3T through at least 2010 at GM’s Shreveport Assembly plant.

Perhaps a better idea (in the long run) would be to stop selling stupid cars like the hummer.

  2. Mumble Duck (used to be Duck) says:

Yeah, thats right Eric. Smart move General Motors!

  3. Cupid Stunt says:

Who in their right mind would buy a business in a ,erket like Hummer. Say no more

  4. Cupid Stunt says:

“market” sorry got all excited seeing Hummers. ooooh the military look.

  5. Murano says:

    Finally, common sense prevails…

  6. Danman2 says:

I will give you a scoop car advice… the winning bidder was…..ME!

I found it at the back section of E-Bay at a buy-it now price of one and fifty dollars, just outbidding Vija Mallya who was second highest at 135$. He was going to remane the Company “force Hummer”.

I am now busily going through the Dubai phonebook asking everyone that answers if they would like to buy one, or twenty.

If all else fails I intend asking the relevent governments for 18 billion (euro’s please)to create a ‘green fund’ ie, recalling every hummer ever made (even Arnie’s) and scrapping the lot.

Bet i make more money in one year this way than GM made from Hummer in ten..

  7. Devil666 says:

If ‘Adios’ is racist, then surely Danman2 is too?

Either way… Hummers need to be diesel. Petrol Hummers are just ludicrous. Everything is better in diesel :D

  8. eh179driver says:

GM has in fact sold Hummer to Chinese firm Sichuan Tengzhong. The deal has been anounced and takes effect in about 3 months. It includes everything needed to build Hummers. I guess GM has a deal to supply engines, but it does not mention that in the announcment.

  9. Schah7 says:

Hey Eh179driver that would be real clever.
The new Hummer company getting their supply of engines from
    G.M.
Hello, that’s exactly what sent Hummer BROKE.
G.M engines is the LAST thing they need if they want to survive.!
Actually with a name of “Eh179driver” you must be a HOLDEN LOVER anyway,so I guess you would say THAT.LOL.!

  10. Dr Nick Riviera says:

    “Hi Everybody”
Without Hummers what will all the small men trapped in a large world do for transport ?
The Chinese copied and produced the Hummer several years back, why would they pay money for the left over GM division ?
If they were made in China or India at least the quality would improve.

  11. Maneesh says:

The pathetic, gutless, under-resourced Victoria Police have purchased them! And will buy more…Because they think, by having a big Hummer with Police stickers, driving past crime hotspots every hour, gangs will stop stabbing people….?!?!?!

  12. Sam, the original says:

    Ni Hao Hummer!

  13. Elitist says:

Hummer will be used by the Chinese against the Americans one day in war, either directly or via Nth Korea, some African country etc…

And love Vic Police, even if they got this rubbish for practically free, petrol and service would cost them in the end…Red neck idiots.

  14. nobody says:

I believe there’s actually a market for big hulking cars in China hence the buy. Perhaps the quality would improve too, who knows. I’ve been told the VW’s that are made in China for the Chinese market are of excellent quality, comparable and sometimes bettering Japanese counterparts.

    Time will tell.

  15. ChineseDriver says:

In fact, the GM cars are sold very well in China, I guess China is the only place where GM can actually make some profit.

  16. kds says:

Maneesh, the Vic Police did not buy Hummers. They were given 6 Hummers to loan by GM Premium Brands as a brand building exercise for both the police and Hummer.
