To those saying only an Australian made vehicle can cope with the harsh condiitons of Australia (dust, a/c) don't forget one of the most formidable and durable off roaders in the world; the Toyota Landcruiser, made in JAPAN.

I hope the latest BT-50 and Ford Ranger ute step it up when it comes to safety. A (surely) simple and inexpensive centre lap sash belt is a good start, not to mention stability control and curtain/side airbags.

As for comments referring to the Toyota throttle jamming wide open thats a little unfair given that problem has been confined to one model in Toyotas half century history. (no I don't work for or own a Toyota)

And guys, keep it light, eh? Really feeling the anger in some of these messages too you'd think we were talking asylum seekers not cars, geez.....

Good luck going to Recall Motors - oops I mean Toyota! You might be lucky enough to not be killed driving one, or the throttle may just jam wide open and send you hurtling into the nearest tree/power pole/oncoming truck! Hilux was recalled for faulty bonnet catch with bonnets flying open at speed blinding drivers! Diesels with faulty injectors.. etc etc!

If you require engine braking in an auto you must manually change the gear selector to a lower gear! Are you the guy that couldn't turn the cruise control off in your Explorer in Melbourne???

A front mounted intercooler works perfectly well for all normal/common off roading, which is all these vehicles are designed for, the exception would be the most extreme competition offroading - which these vehicles and all other d/cab 4x4 ute are not designed for.

Which Recall Motors, oops Toyota dealer do you work for?

If Ford Aust are in charge of the world development of the Ranger, then I would have to ask which world? Maybe Planet Zod. I have a Series 1 and have had it for about 12 months and 'driven' 60,000 Kms in it. Apart from the very common criticism about the rear doors a couple of other small issues.
Having a Auto 4WD version,
The 4WD indicator comes on when going to 4WD, then goes off to say you are still in 4WD, then may come on to say there is a problem with 4WD. The logic of On= On, Off= On and Fault= On about sums up the design philosophy of the vehicle. (Read the manual, this is normal)
Being a 4WD, where do you think you should mount the Intercooler and Tx Oil Cooler, of course lets mount it right down low behind the plastic bumper, where it can potentially, receive the most amount of damage.
The wonderful Auto Tx, who thought up this one? It's sole purpose in life is to try to get into 5th. When taking your foot off the accelerator, the Tx seems to go to Angel Gear (neutral) as the Tacho reads about 800Rpm. Sometimes it will provide engine braking for about 30 secs, then go to neutral. This seems to be random as to when it will decide to do this? What about when in 4WD I hear you say, you are off road and would like to have some engine braking, Nope does work here either. Great when your on a dirt road, just have faith in the ABS.
I love the warning system for the ignition key. We like to go to the beach and sometimes just have the doors open and listen to the cricket etc. The Radio (or anything else for that matter) does work unless the key is on Acc. The warning beeper loves to tell you the door is open and this then chimes away over the radio. Drives us all mad. Best part is, you can drive down the road with a door open and receive no warning apart from the dash light.
Warning, do not press to hard against any panel, you WILL dent them.
I won't go on about the rest of the infuriating engineering and design flaws about the Ranger, but lets hope the initial Ranger was designed overseas, because I wouldn't want to put my name to this one. Now where was the Toyota dealer again?
Happy Motoring

Team Lead T6, learn how to spell. And if you do work for Ford keep your mouth shut. Remember you are bound by commercial confidentially. If they find out who you are, you may just no longer work at Ford.....

Hi All,
I'm Working in T6 for last 2 years.
Have you seen interiors, which will be released??? It's more like a Car than a pick-up truck.
This truck will be lunched with both Ford & Mazda brands.
In different countries, 1st in Thailand, Then Australia, South Africa & Argentina.
This car packaging is better than any other prevoius models (interiors). As Ford Autralia is struglling to keep their name up infront of their US Bosses, Ford Australia is tring to prove themself.

About Star rating, yes it will get a good rating in Euro Ncap. About varients, it has single & dbl cab varients.....

Ford brought out a brand new PK Ranger in 2009. looks similar to the bt 50 but still way different. Also ford come with a color coated front bumber. Get your facts straight!

Fair enough Tony,
I just cant put myself into a "jacked up" true 4WD because I demand a bit of comfort and decent handling.

I always said previous to this article if the aussie engineers show the talent they did on the Territory, they may have just made a vehicle thats a worthy alternative to my string of Falcon utes.

Also what I cant stand is the gear ratios in the jappers nor the 20 turns lock to lock either

Tha Falcons also got better pulling power than even the diesels

that's all well and good but I think a lot of people (including myself) are interested in jacked up 4wd crew cabs like colorados/d-max/bt50s/navaras but are put off by the lack of safety

IMO a Ford or Holden ute is no way a replacement for a true 4wd turbodiesel crew cab ute - driven a Holden Crewman (what a piece of shit)

not interested in hilux (too expensive) nor the d40 navara (bit of an unproved unreliable platform) but something like the d-max is a well proven platform being a mainstay in south east asia

i like my XR6T with the ZF 6 spd but am certainly no fan of Ford at all
