Magna to buy into Opel – report

By David Twomey |

Canadian car parts group Magna International has reached a preliminary deal with General Motors to invest in its beleaguered European division Opel/Vauxhall, sources close to the negotiations has told Reuters newsagency today.

The sources said Magna and GM still had to work out details before an expected meeting later today with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Separately, a government spokesman said a meeting with Chancellor Merkel and top government officials had been pushed back until 6 pm due to ongoing negotiations between GM and Magna.

“We have an agreement in principle between GM and Magna,” one source told Reuters.

The German government has been scrambling to safeguard Opel’s future before its US parent files for bankruptcy, a step that could come within days.

A first round of talks between Germany, the U.S. government and GM collapsed amid mutual recriminations on Thursday morning, prompting Berlin to set a new round of negotiations for Friday.

Italian carmaker Fiat, Magna’s main rivals in the battle for Opel, said hours before the talks were to begin that it would not participate. That left the door open for Magna, which has been in intense discussions with GM representatives for the past 24 hours.

Talks collapsed on Thursday when Washington balked at Germany’s plan to temporarily place Opel assets in a trust to shield them from GM creditors. Berlin responded by refusing to release 1.5 billion euros (US$2.10 billion) in bridge financing for Opel.

US officials must still agree to the trust idea for a deal to work, but the preliminary pact between Magna and GM increases the likelihood that this will occur and that the German government will release the funds Opel needs to continue operations.

Based in Ruesselsheim near Frankfurt, Opel employs 25,000 staff in Germany and has been under GM’s wing for 80 years.

It is part of a GM Europe operation that employs over 50,000, with car manufacturing plants in Spain, Poland, Belgium and Britain, where Opel cars are sold under the Vauxhall brand, as well as engine and parts sites such as Aspern near Vienna.

Like its parent GM, Opel has suffered acutely from the worldwide economic slowdown.

Magna, started by Austrian emigre Frank Stronach in a Toronto garage nearly half a century ago, wants to use Opel to make a push into the Russian market.

It was favoured over Fiat by many in the German government and may have boosted its chances by offering to help cover US$500 million requested by GM during the failed late night talks.

Good. Opel has really gotten itself together the last few years. The Corsa, up until the launch of the new Fiesta and Jazz, was in the top three best budget superminis and the Astra is a pretty good car too. They were smart enough to strike the name Vectra from their large car and as far as losing Vauxhall goes, well it’s the same cars but we’d lose VXR as well.
I’m very happy that they have been spared.

Magna…. sends a shiver up my spine of the awful Mitsubishi heap I owned.
Wonder what the furure lies, will they remain competative and up there with Ford, VW etc or will under investment set them on the path of decline. 10 yrs or so will tell.

  • Cupid Stunt

Along with Alex as well I reckon that Opel need to come up with a car name that doesn’t end in “A”. It neither big nor clever. To a point it makes me cringe, Astra, Corsa, Vectra, Meriva, Zafira, Agila, Omega, Ampera, Antara, Sintra, Tigra, Viva,Frontera, Calibra Aaaaaaaaaaggghhhhh!!!
Please please please think outside the circle Opel/Vauxhall soooo 80′s.

  • Reckless1

Yeah, Magna, Corolla, Vienta, Fiesta, Cortina, etc, etc.

Damn that Opel for such a bad , bad thing.

Some people are justa stupida, ya ?

  • High Horser

So the Germans would rather be run my a Russian company than Fiat.
I think in the end I can see another car company buying out Magna, I think Porsche.

  • Frenchie

No High Horser, they (Magna) want to push (Opel) into the Russian market.

Magna will have to set up and expand some car plants in former eastern block countries and/or Russia where labour is much cheaper. Something GM was slow/relunctant to do.

  • Reckless1

Frenchie, investing billions into Russia as a westener has “you will lose everything” written all over it.

I’d probably rather invest in North Korea………

I’m pretty sure the easiest decision made by GM was to “stay out of russia, we’re losing enough as it is…..”

  • Bor’ka

Reckless1, firstly Russia is actually a capitalist country now. Secondly, Ford has a one of their focus plants there, and they aren’t on the verge of bankruptcy as oppossed to GM, so possibly not the worst decision.

I guess they do have a lot of car names that end with ‘A’. But not every car they have ends in ‘A’.

But what about the Vivaro, Combo, Movano and GT?

  • Frenchie

Reckless, after China, Russia is GM biggest market and most third most profitable.

Magna are going to have a good future.

  • High Horser

Magna is owned by a Russian trucking company.

    High Horser,

Magna is Canadian. The Russian bank is a 35% partner – as is GM – Magna has 20%. The plan is to use the Russian GAZ company, to produce Opels in Russia. Gaz currently assembles the Dodge Stratus in Russia. Magna also owns Steyr in Austria which assembles Chrysler Jeeps for Europe.

I dont believe FIAT are out of the equation just yet.

    More to follow i feel……

    Cheers
