Porsche Cayman GT4 inadvertently revealed on car maker’s website

One of the automotive world’s worst kept secrets, the Porsche Cayman GT4, has been inadvertently revealed on one of the German manufacturer’s websites.

The Cayman GT4 is listed on the global Porsche Driving website as one of the vehicles punters can select for the brand’s Driving Experience dynamic program, despite not yet being officially confirmed for production by the car maker.

The GT4 appears between the Cayman GTS and the 911 Carrera S on the list, confirming, as expected, that it will be the hottest and most hardcore version of the compact Cayman coupe to date.

CarAdvice’s spy photographers have snapped Porsche Cayman GT4 prototypes twice this year – first in May on public roads, and most recently in June undergoing high-speed testing at the Nurburgring, as seen in these images.

The GT4 is easily distinguished from the GTS and the rest of the Cayman range by its racy exterior that features larger air intakes, a cooling duct along the bonnet lip, a prominent lower front splitter and a massive rear spoiler.

It also sits lower than the GTS, indicating a more performance-oriented suspension set-up, and gains large ceramic brake discs for enhanced stopping power.

It’s believed that rather than getting an uprated version of the Cayman GTS’s 250kW 3.4-litre flat six-cylinder engine, the Cayman GT4 may adopt the 3.8-litre flat six from the 911 Carrera S, albeit detuned from 294kW to somewhere between 268-283kW. Porsche’s seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission should also feature.

The GT4’s 0-100km/h sprint time is expected to land between the 4.1 seconds of the 911 Carrera S and 4.6 seconds of the Cayman GTS (both equipped with Sport Chrono package).

CarAdvice first reported about Porsche’s plans to develop a more track-focused Cayman in early 2013 when 911 chief engineer Andreas Preuninger said: “Can we emulate the success of GT3 [with Cayman]? Maybe, I don’t see why not…”

The Porsche Cayman GT4 is expected to go on sale in 2015, priced north of the $161,400 Cayman GTS.
