2009 Mercedes E-Class Estate spied

By George Skentzos |

With the new generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class having already arrived in showrooms across Europe, the design of its Estate counterpart leaves little to the imagination with only the tail lights still under wraps.

Due to make its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, these images reveal the shape of the rear side windows and rear door and tail lights for the first time.

Driver assistance will be a major theme for the new generation E-Class Estate with lane-departure warnings, an eye-movement monitor, traffic-sign identification, road-condition sensors and stability control added to the range.

The Estate version will naturally mimic the model range and engine line-up of the sedan which includes the usual ensemble of petrol and diesel V6 and V8 engines.

The potent flagship AMG version is also already in development and will feature 386kW 6.2-litre V8-engine.

    That is ugly!

  • Hummer Time

I’ll second that….Reminds me of a old model Subaru Liberty

With some decent wheels, and a decent color (whats with Mercedes and that color beige, really) and of course, without that cladding, I think it’d be the best looker of the range, next to the coupe.

The sedan is a little awkward from some angles, which is a real shame, because the front half of the car is quite dramatic (alas, with the right wheel/color combo, as is usual for a Mercedes).

Well I quite like it. I’m not a massive fan of the coupe and I think the new Saloon version is awfully boring, even with the AMG package. This looks very purposeful and useful. My problem with it though is the same problem I have with the Saloon version, I would take almost any of it’s rivals before it.
I have no problem with Mercedes but I would rather a new 5 Series Touring (my current one is very useful and I don’t mind the front on the 5 GT), Audi A6 (S-Line package, big wheels and the 3.0 TDI Quattro is a great all rounder), Volvo V70 (T6 or D5 engines with the R Design package is once again, a great all rounder) and of course the new XF Estate is promised for later in the year and I’m sure that will look much more exciting than this. It will have a lot more character as well and with the Diesel S engine, it would be, once again, a great all rounder that would be a better drive than this. Especially if they bring an XF R Estate, which they inevitably will.
I’m sure an E250 CDI Estate would be a great all rounder as well, but am I alone in thinking that there would be nothing exciting or even vaguely interesting about it? A bit boring maybe? The new E-Class’s interior doesn’t look too good either. The plastics may be good quality but they don’t look it.

On a seperate note, does anybody else agree that Mercedes are putting there back door handles too far forward? To me, it’s the same on the C-Class. Just looks a bit awkward and could stand to go back a couple of inches.

  • Frenchie

Or are they making their rear doors longer?

  • Yanzo

omg!… wtf is that!!!….. that’ hella ugly. i’d swerve at that thing it’s so ugly

  • Alex

Yanzo, I really don’t think anybody who manages to use OMG, WTF and “hella” all in the space of six words should have any authority on what looks good. What are you? A sixteen year old girl?

  • o

OK MERC,BMW,AUDI BEIGE IS NEVER GOING TO BE THE NEXT COLOR IT IS UGLY

  • CK

As someone famous once said, OMG, WTF that is one hellava ugly vee-hickle.

If it was a kid, you’d slap the mother.

3Actually Alex, if you look at it ergonomically the door handles are where you would be standing to open them and get into the vehicle, (oar if you were a doorman) because the doors have such a big curve around the wheel arch you would open then move forward around teh door to get in…

I’m just going to say something to join in this little conversation being had above.

    LOL

Haha, sorry I had to. But now back to the topic at hand, I’m not saying its an ugly car, just that Mercedes-Benz aren’t making beautiful cars anymore. They’re designs are too particular to be beautiful. The C-Class is almost too aggressive but I still love it to bits. The E-Class is bland but I think a lot of that market want bland. I’m not sure.

  • Duck

Talk about being heavely disguised!!!! Hehe, lol.

I don’t really hate it, but I don’t really like it. So it’s not that bad in my opinion.

  • Cupid Stunt

Rear end looks like a Fiat crossed with a Hyundai. Foul. Where are Mercedes going with their styling, looks to me like they are following Hyundai.

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

Front looks typical Merc but that back, its just plain scary.

  • Duck

I’m guessing you don’t like much Merc’s, Bavarian Missile! ;)

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

mmmm, unless it has a AMG badge on it Duck .The rest look as boring as they are too drive . My experience of owning one when I was younger made me realise that \”this was made for old people\”.So I went back to BMWs………
