Mercedes SLS AMG spied in production trim

May 26, 2009 by George Skentzos

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has been spied with the least amount of camouflage yet as its development due date approaches at the end of 2009.

Unlike past spy shots – including the official release from AMG – these new images show the car in near production trim, revealing many exterior features for the first time such as the tail lights and exhaust outlets.

It seems the new Gullwing will also pay homage to the original 300 SL with the Mercedes star taking pride of place at the centre of the grille.

Subtle features such as the active rear spoiler, rear parking sensors and low-mounted door handles can also be seen for the first time, along with what appear to be production-ready wheels.

The sliver of tail lights showing from behind the dark tape seem to resemble those found on the McLaren SLR, perhaps hinting at the modern inspiration for the reborn classic.

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed the SLS will use an aggressively tuned version of the brand’s 6.2-litre V8 engine, pumping out a staggering 420kW and 650Nm, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The final production version will be made available to customers in the first quarter of 2010.

Hahaha… check out the location of the door handles! That looks so ridiculous!!!

I don’t know how practical it would be either…

  2. Tom says:

I doubt those will be doorhandles for some reason

and too me, it just doesnt look pretty. Its too masculine and has a strong jawline. The original gullwing had smooth flowing lines not unlike modern aston martins.

  3. Wheelnut says:

That could infact be where the door handles will be given that the car is going to have Gullwing doors; which means the doorsill will be 1/5 the way up the side [ similar to a Ford GT-40 or BMW-McLaren F1]

I think the bonnet is too long given that the car is supposed to be a modern version of the iconic 200SL from the 50-60s.. it should be slightly bigger than an SLK55

ive said it for a while – soon to be my new favourite car…

  5. smokin'r32 says:

I like how this thing is turning out, nice classic shape instead of the generic swept-back supercar look. Ill be very interested to see how it all comes together

  6. Yanzo says:

    that’s it… i’d rather get the sl65 or is it 63. idk but it’s got 1000 nm of torque…. :) omg… 1 freakin thousand…

  7. Alex says:

Wheelnut, I think you mean 300SL.

I am liking the shape that this car is taking and to me, it is the first truly exciting Mercedes in quite a while. Until now, all they have really done is continually add the 6.2 V8 to relatively staid cars. No bad thing, but this is different. I am liking it but what I really would like is an original 300SL Gullwing. To me, that was one of the most beautiful cars ever made and it still looks fantastic. These will stand out on the road but not as much as an original would.

  8. Shane says:

Im a porsche man but that car is very nice
