Mercedes SLS AMG spied in production trim

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has been spied with the least amount of camouflage yet as its development due date approaches at the end of 2009.

Unlike past spy shots - including the official release from AMG - these new images show the car in near production trim, revealing many exterior features for the first time such as the tail lights and exhaust outlets.

It seems the new Gullwing will also pay homage to the original 300 SL with the Mercedes star taking pride of place at the centre of the grille.

Subtle features such as the active rear spoiler, rear parking sensors and low-mounted door handles can also be seen for the first time, along with what appear to be production-ready wheels.

The sliver of tail lights showing from behind the dark tape seem to resemble those found on the McLaren SLR, perhaps hinting at the modern inspiration for the reborn classic.

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed the SLS will use an aggressively tuned version of the brand's 6.2-litre V8 engine, pumping out a staggering 420kW and 650Nm, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The final production version will be made available to customers in the first quarter of 2010.
