BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition sports eye-catching highlights

The limited run BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition has been created to celebrate the fact that an M4 lookalike has run away with this year's DTM championship.

Unless you've been following the DTM championship closely, last weekend's season ending race at the Hockenheimring was all about the Audi RS7 Piloted Driving Concept. That unique RS7 and its phalanx of state-of-the-art electronics was able to steer itself automatically around the circuit at race speed.

BMW, however, would like to remind us all that an M4-styled vehicle helped Marco Wittmann and BMW Team RMG take out this year's drivers' championship with two races to spare.

The limited edition M4 DTM Champion Edition has been dressed up, as much as possible, to look like its distant track relation. To that end, the DTM Champion Edition features an orange-framed double kidney grille, matt black bonnet and multi-colour stripe design reminiscent of the Team RMG's race cars.

The striped matt black treatment stretches into the boot lid, and race-style car identification has been stickered onto the rear windows and doors. Also present are thick black character lines running above the car's shoulder line and sills, as well as a larger-than-Bavaria M-badge just aft of the front wheel arch.

Other styling mods include 19-inch alloy wheels, carbonfibre mirror caps, a rear spoiler, carbonfibre diffuser insert and black front splitter.

Under the skin the M4 DTM Champion Edition is fitted with the same 317kW/550Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six as regular M4s. All DTM Champion Edition models come with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, ceramic brakes and M Driver's Package as standard.

In honour of the Wittman's car number, the M4 DTM Champion Edition will be limited to just 23 copies.

Like V8 Supercars, DTM racecars only have a superficial resemblance to the showroom-ready models they represent. For example, all DTM cars feature a V8 engine powering the rear wheels, as well as standardised tyres, brakes, transmissions, electronics and safety systems.

Regulations state that engines have a maximum capacity of four litres and be fitted with two 28mm air restrictors. DTM engines typically generate around 370kW of power.
