Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe makes Australian premiere

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe made its Australian premiere this week at Melbourne’s Motorclassica, known as the Australian International Concours d’Elegance.

As such, the stunning grand tourer that replaces the CL makes its first local public appearance one year after the four-door S-Class sedan likewise made its debut at the 2013 Motorclassica.

The two-door land yacht officially launches from February 2015. The local range will feature the choice of 335kW/700Nm 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 S500 or 430kW/900Nm 5.5-litre S63 AMG Coupe variants, with the former arriving a few months after the latter.

Mercedes-Benz already holds a remarkable 50 Australian pre-orders for the AMG-powered version alone.

A highlight of the coupe is its world-first curve tilting function that allows it to lean into corners like a motorcyclist. For more information on the S-Class Coupe click here, and for our review from the international launch click here

Choosing Motorclassica to premiere the S-Class sedan last year was a trend-setting move by Mercedes-Benz, which saw the event as an ideal forum for its well-to-do clientele, and a good option in lieu of the axed Australian International Motor Show.

“Mercedes-Benz blazed a trail last year as the first manufacturer to utilise Motorclassica to reveal a contemporary model and such was its success, the company immediately advised us they wanted to repeat the experience this year,” Motorclassica event director Paul Mathers said.

“We’re delighted to welcome them back and to also welcome an increased number of contemporary heritage car and motorcycle brands to the event, a recognition both of the credibility of Motorclassica and the engaged audience we attract.

“It’s a tremendous way for manufacturers to present their current wares on a platform that also presents the history of their brands.”

As we have reported, Jaguar, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Caterham, Morgan and Lotus will exhibit at Motorclassica this year, while on two wheels there will be displays from Triumph, Indian, BMW, MV Augusta and Benelli.

Mercedes-Benz Cars and chief executive officer of Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific managing director Horst Von Sanden said the decision to stage a premiere for the second year running made perfect sense.

“Motorclassica again hosts the Premiere of one of our new vehicles, the beautiful S-Class Coupé. Motorclassica is truly a unique event within Australasia and presents the perfect opportunity for car enthusiasts to take pleasure in viewing both classic and contemporary vehicles.”

The Australian Concours is on at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building from October 24 to 26.
