Audi Australia drops A6 Avant

Audi Australia will drop the A6 Avant range when it launches the updated 2015 Audi A6 in March or April next year.

The decision comes amid lacklustre sales of the standard station wagon, with buyers opting for the ever-popular Audi A6 Allroad and the Audi RS6 superwagon instead.

Speaking with CarAdvice today at the updated A6’s launch in Dresden, Germany, Audi Australia’s senior product communications executive, Shaun Cleary, hinted that the popularity of the A6 Allroad and RS6 sealed the regular Avant’s fate.

“The Allroad quattro is a much stronger attraction at that end of the market and in terms of Avant sales I think the A4 Avant [better] covers that end of the market,” Cleary said.

Currently the Allroad quattro and RS6 make up for over 85 per cent of all A6 family Avant sales, meaning the regular A6 Avant has seen limited success in the Australian market.

Audi’s decision will leave the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class as the only two premium brands offering large estate/wagon models.
