Ford to quit V8 Supercars at the end of 2015 – report

Ford will pull out of the local V8 Supercars championship at the end of 2015, according to a report.

The story, published by The Daily Telegraph, states that Ford will "officially quit the sport at the end of the year and will not renew a multi-million dollar year deal with reigning Bathurst champions Ford Performance Racing".

The move is not a particularly surprising one, given Ford is planning to shut down its local manufacturing in October 2016. The brand will no longer build a V8-powered Falcon which has for so long formed the basis of the maker's involvement in the sport.

According to the newspaper, two remaining teams - FPR and Penske/Dick Johnson Racing - are planning to ready the final FG X Falcon for the 2015 season, however they will not be backed with any financial assistance from the car maker.

The Daily Telegraph quotes V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton as saying that the racing organisation has been persistent in its attempts to get Ford to commit to the future.

“We have two teams who will race Ford in 2015 even if they will not be factory backed,’’ he told the paper. "We have consistently made our case to Ford, not only for 2015, but well into the future. They know exactly where we are going and the huge benefits we can deliver.

"We would obviously love to have them continue in the sport," Warburton was quoted as saying.

CarAdvice has contacted Ford Australia for comment on the reports.

The news comes on the eve of the 2014 Bathurst 1000 race, which could be the second-last time fans will see Ford and Holden battle it out at Mount Panorama.
