Peugeot 308 GTi confirmed: 199kW hot-hatch on the cards

A new Peugeot 308 GTi hot-hatch could boast as much as 199kW from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo engine.

CarAdvice can reveal that Peugeot is looking at offering the new 308 GTi with either 250 or 270PS (that’s 184kW or 199kW, respectively). The brand currently offers a 199kW tune of its 1.6-litre turbo engine in the RCZ R, and this is likely to be the same powertrain used in the potent new 308 GTi.

At a presentation from the French maker’s performance arm Peugeot Sport, a slide was shown clearly showing plans for a 308 GTi (see below), and Peugeot Sport director Bruno Famin confirmed the intentions of the company to expand the GTi line.

“We are working on the new GTi version of the 308, with a possible engine of 250-270PS,” he said.

With power figures in that range, the 308 GTi would be ripe to take aim at the Ford Focus ST (184kW) and easily outgun the Volkswagen Golf GTI (162-169kW, the latter with the Performance Pack), while using a smaller capacity engine than both of those cars.

The new 308 will be offered in a range of prices and power levels, with the most potent confirmed model being the GT, which packs 155kW and 285Nm – close to rivals like the Kia Pro_cee’d GT and Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo (both with 150kW/265Nm).

Peugeot Australia national marketing manager Dimitri Andreatidis said that there has been no confirmation for the 308 GTi to be sold in Australia.

“However, if it was made available to us we would definitely want it, absolutely," Andreatidis said. "All I can say is if the vehicle were to be made available to us, we'd greet it with open arms."

No official images of the new 308 GTi have been released but the all-new hot-hatch is likely to borrow some styling cues from the hot 308 R design concept (pictured above and below).

Peugeot currently sells only the 208 GTi, which is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol with 147kW of power and 275Nm of torque.

An even hotter commemorative version, the 208 GTi 30th Anniversary Edition, is confirmed to go on sale here in the first quarter of 2015, with 155kW and 300Nm.
