Fog lights on in fine weather are becoming an epidemic in Cairns. Unforunately manufacturers promote them in the extras list in a way that implies they are some u-beaut feature!

As someone who spends around 12 hours a night on the road it is frustrating that the law isn't enforced. One moron up here has actually bypassed his headlights in his VN commodore and uses them as headlights and I have actually seen him drive past the police. Even the damned taxi drivers have started doing it.

The worst ones for dazzling oncoming traffic that I have seem so far are on WRX's, Falcon XR6's and Toyota Prius (a large taxi fleet here). The bogans in the XR6's use their parkers and the foglights and the effect is a ridiculous look but they obviously think it is somehow cool.

Time to crack down on the practice. It is illegal and dangerous.

Steve - USA; Only New York State's driver manual (a Road Users Handbook) has text relating specifically to the use of front and rear fog lights, the ONLY US state driver training manual that has text covering the lamp function.

I wrote that circa 2002. I tried telling other state DMV editors, but at that stage they didn't believe rear fogs existed. I ppointed out SAE J1319 and its UNECE c38 counterpart.

Terminology; a "Fog light" is *NOT* a "Driving Lamp". A driving lamp is a lamp that is wired to only operate when the cars regular high-beam switch is flicked to - high-beam! They 'see' out 200metres plus. Front fogs - close-in 10-50m max but with a wide, hand-fan shaped beam pattern, designed for use at slow speed needed when driving in heavy fog et al.

HID et al - Some people use illegal aftermarket HID kit installs in their halogen headlights, a cause of glare.

My car has high-beams standard (duh), doesn't mean I should use it always, my speedo reads 260km/h - doesn't mean I should be at that speed.

The rear fog lamps are up to 21 times the luminous efficiency of a cars standard taillight - so when in a heavy fog, or in torrential rain or in bushfire smoke etc with the rear fog lamp ON - if you approach that car at a faster speed, the first thing you'll see is a red light appearing out of the haze BEFORE the cars regular standard taillights, often seconds extra warning is given.

You will NOT succeed in repealing the front and rear fog lamp law, as its source implementation is INTERNATIONAL and is adopted into ALL countries subscribed to "The United Nations Convention on Road Traffic, Signs & Signals".

The law IS an international one, meaning folk all over the planet have the same uniform requirement; that front fogs may only be used under hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility. Some countries further restrict the use of front fogs (and rear) to 100m or less visibility.

All well and good, but use the lamp according to its design intention, and law.

Front fog lights must not be used in clear weather, day or night, period.

Want to use a forward light in daytime? Use your low beam headlights, or fit a DRL kit (LED technology or bulb). DRL's = 21 watts; front fogs = 55watts.

Better still, call Subaru UK and order the DS rear fog instead, then grab an aftermarket rear fog lamp switch complete with symbol and yellow LED telltale. Reasoning; one doesn't spend that much time driving backwards, and a rear fog could well save your butt - when those conditions deteriorate, heavy fog, bushfire smoke, torrential rain, gravel roads etc.

I remind Hyundai are only one brand, most car makes now have a rear fog.

Another reason why HWP need not discuss and let off as one tells me he does, but issue the fine instead and simply tell them why.

I have a neighbour (Commodore SS) that runs his fogs, fully aware of the law; feels the chance is near zero for enforcement.

I understand your frustration. The VX-VY SS units were made in South Korea by Brown & Watson, this series are the recognised 'glaries'. HSV vehicles of the same period had fully compliant front fogs from the same supplier, so glare in those is much less. The SS series should have had the cars recalled in my view.

All an aside from the legal use of the front fogs, which is another matter. This thread is now what, 4 years old?! :-)
