BMW M4 Convertible :: 4.4sec twin-turbo drop-top lobs from $178,430

The first-ever BMW M4 Convertible is now on sale in Australia priced from $178,430, representing a near $2000 price cut compared with the model it replaces.

Taking its place atop the new BMW 4 Series range, the BMW M4 Convertible is priced $51,800 above the top-spec 435i Convertible and $12,000 above the M4 Coupe.

Starting $1965 below the outgoing automatic-equipped 4.0-litre V8-powered BMW M3 Convertible, the M4 Convertible comes in $2530 dearer than the $175,900 automatic-only 331kW/430Nm naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8-powered Audi RS5 Cabriolet.

Sharing more than the M4 hardtop's signature aluminium power-domed bonnet, flared guards and 19-inch forged light alloy wheels, the performance drop-top is powered by the same 317kW/550Nm twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder used to power the M3/M4 twins – albeit with claimed fuel consumption rising from 8.3 litres per 100km to 8.7L/100km.

Despite the addition of a three-section folding metal roof, which can be opened at up to 18km/h in “under 20 seconds”, the lidless two-door M car can sprint to triple figures in a claimed 4.4 seconds – 0.3sec slower than both the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe but 0.5sec faster than the RS5 Cabriolet.

BMW Australia says the 0-100km/h claim remains the same whether buyers opt for the standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or the (no cost alternative) six-speed manual.

Inside, the M4 Convertible again mirrors its performance kin with an M leather steering wheel, M gearshift lever and M door sills. Electrically adjustable M seats with illuminated M emblems are also carried over, while the M4 Convertible uniquely gains integrated neck warming ‘air collars’ and a wind deflector.

Offering a boot capacity of between 370 litres (roof up) and 220L (roof down), the M4 Convertible provides up to 20L more space than the E93 M3 Convertible, though, the largest figure is still down 75L on the fixed-roof M4’s 445-litre rear end.

Though rear-view and surround view cameras, as well as iDrive, DAB+ digital radio and a three year/unlimited kilometre warranty are all standard, BMW’s expanded ConnectedDrive assistance technology is a $690 option.

Available across BMWs range, the M4 Convertible can be covered under the car maker’s inclusive servicing package, which combines all scheduled servicing costs for five years or 80,000km, from $990.
