2006 VolksWagen Jetta Fuel Consumption

I wrote an article about Diesel vs Hybrid cars a few days ago reinforcing my belief that Hybrid and not Diesel is the future of cars. However it seems like the new VolksWagen Jetta Diesel is out to prove me wrong. The new Jetta can manage almost 1200km of highway driving per tank. Given that the tank is only 55L in capacity, that is a truly amazing fact. With a reported fuel consumption of only 5.8L /100km for city and highway driving combined it is still higher than the 4.4L / 100km of the Toyota Prius. However given that its a diesel and it costs less, its outstanding!
Would we buy it? No, because its powered by a 2.0L Turbocharged Diesel engine producing nothing more than 103KW of power (but a very respectful 320Nm of Torque). But just because we don’t like it doesn’t mean you don’t have to! Because if getting to 100km/hr in 9.7 secs isn’t slow for you, if the noise of the engine doesnt annoy you, if you don’t mind the fact that the back of you car looks like a 2000 model Toyota Corolla and that you are driving a car made in Mexico (so much for paying for a German car). Then the VolksWagen Jetta might just be your kind of car!

I am not 100% sure to be honest, my only impression of the car has been in motorshows, and the quality seems pretty good – but you can’t tell till you drive it for a while. I am more scared of the new Chinese made VWs than the Mexican ones.
Ford just invested some enormous amount of money into a mexican plant, so things are really picking up over there.

So what if its made in Mexico? That location has shipped Beetles and Jetta’s to the US, and theirs is a very demanding marketplace. The VW plants globally all conform with the very rigid German standards of the Wolfsburg plant. The Chinese built Polo sedan imported here in 2005 was very well built too. I am now driving my 6th VW, a Jetta TDI with DSG, and its outstandingly built, and deserves the awards its getting in Australia.

Best Cars Australia has just Rated the Polo,Jetta and Golf GTI as the best cars in their class.
I am looking at buying one myself, but I was hoping that someone would be able to help me out, with information on the running cost of the Jetta 2.0 TDI over a year.
Any information will be appreciated.

F-O – Most of us baby booming Aussies had something to do with an air-cooled Beetle or Kombi while we were growing up. Then when it came time to buy a car in the 70’s, VW left Australia and the new Golfs and some other models were fully imported by an agent and unfortunately the dealer network wasn’t supported well. Globally VW is the 4th biggest manufacturer, very close behind Toyota in 3rd. GM & Ford are 1 & 2. That leaves us downunder keen to experience what the rest of the world was enjoying during the 80’s & 90’s.
Vote:Steve – As far as Jetta’s being made in Mexico (soon to be made in South Africa), I dont believe it matters where a car is assembled. I believe it all comes down to quality control and after market support of your product. VW does it well.
Francois – After the 1st 15,000 klm service my running costs on the 2.0TDi were Fuel 9.25c per klm (ave $1.38 per litre – diesel now around $1.75/l) Service $316. Warranty work – one touch driver’s electric window needed adjustment. That’s 11.25c Australian per klm. No regrets & no complaints.
