Toyota & Lexus Sale Statistics May 2007

June 7, 2007 by Alborz Fallah

If anyone thought Toyota was slowing down, the latest figures from VFACTS only show the opposite. Australia’s number one seller today broke an all time record to become the first car company to sell more than 90,000 cars from January to May.

Toyota sold 91,984 vehicles in the first five months of the year, 11.9 per cent higher than at the same stage last year. This puts Toyota over 30,000 sales ahead of Holden and nearly 48,000 sales in front of Ford.

Run out sales as well as the new Corolla contributed to the success. Toyota’s environmentally friendly Prius achieved an all-time record of 380 sales on the back of increased supply with the HiLux finding 3501 new owners.

There are many reasons why Toyota are so successful. Toyota enjoys an almost unchallenged quality and reliability image while slowly changing their bland image to a more spirited car maker (although this still needs a lot of work). The Aurion, Camry and Corolla have all come a long way since the “fridge on wheels” days.

As for Toyota’s luxuy arm, Lexus sold 753 vehicles in May an increase of 132 vehicles over May 2006. Apart from Lexus’ normal range, Hybrids also performed well (Lexus RX 400h – 63 and GS 450h – 30). Unlike the US, in Australia Lexus still lags behind the Germans, a position which is slowly changing in the Japanese favour.

LS460

The all-new Lexus LS 460 was a standout, posting 37 sales in its first month to claim second position in the upper large segment.

  1. Lexus IS 250 – 381
  2. RX 350 – 203
  3. Lexus RX 400h – 53
  4. Lexus LS 460 – 37
  5. Lexus GS 450h – 30
