2015 Hyundai i20 : Full details of European-spec hatch revealed

Full details of the second-generation Hyundai i20 have been released, revealing the city car’s interior and technical specifications ahead of its debut at next month’s Paris motor show.

Hyundai confirmed the new i20 would be 40mm longer from nose to tail than its predecessor (4035mm) and ride on a 45mm-longer wheelbase (2570mm) when it released the first two exterior images last month.

With the release of detailed interior shots today, the South Korean car maker claims the new model also offers class-leading interior space, with 1892mm of combined front and rear legroom.

The boot is now 10 per cent larger, measuring 326 litres, and expands to 1042L with the 60:40 split rear seats pushed forward.

A new multi-function three-spoke steering wheel sits in front of a new instrument cluster with a 3.5-inch LCD information screen. A basic audio system is positioned at the top of the centre stack, with climate functions in a separate cluster at its base.

Hyundai says soft-touch plastics line the dashboard and door panels, while satin chrome elements on the steering wheel and door handles further lift interior quality.

Hyundai claims the second-generation i20’s stronger and stiffer platform and body, along with the introduction of new sound-absorption measures, lead to improved NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels, enhancing cabin comfort.

Lane departure warning headlines the new i20’s safety package, which also includes electronic stability control, six airbags (dual front, side and curtains), hill start assist, tyre pressure monitor, and an emergency stop signal.

The European line-up features two petrol engines and two diesels. The base 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol comes in 55kW and 62kW tunes, both with 122Nm, and is offered exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission. The larger 1.4-litre unit produces 74kW and 134Nm, and is available with four-speed automatic and six-speed manual gearboxes.

The entry-level 1.1-litre three-cylinder diesel makes 55kW and 180Nm, while the 1.4-litre four-cylinder diesel produces 66kW and 240Nm. Neither is available with an auto ’box, with a six-speed manual buyers’ only option.

The first-generation Hyundai i20 is the top-selling vehicle in Australia’s city car class in 2014, but the local division says it is still finalising its future small car line-up and is yet to sign off on the new model.

The i20 was narrowly outsold by the similarly sized and priced Hyundai Accent last month (1067 versus 1087), though it still claimed an 11.7 per cent share of the segment.
