Good review of 2009 BMW Z4.. I like the design and how the car moves.. it was very fashionable.. And of course the important part is the engine.. it drives like it was flying.. I really like it.. Thanks for the wonderful review.

looks nice and would drive very well, overpriced though, i’d rather a M3 sedan for that type of money, or the new 2010 Subaru Liberty GT for a 3rd of the dough, the remaining 100k can sit in the bank

Are you talking about the XF Jag? That’s interesting because I thought the opposite, it looked old fashion the minute it was released in my opinion.

Jimmy, I too liked the designs but I have to say, the 6 Series was unnecessarily bulbous and weird. It was stubby at the front and frumpy at the back. I like the 1, 3 and 5 Series though. And the Z4 and X5s. I don’t think the 5 Series quite looks like it’s just been released and the XF now looks better but it is dating very well.

I can’t help but like this car.

I actually think the design is very tasteful, balanced, and stylish. It works well. The engines are great, it appears to have the typical BMW poise and rigidity, and the quality of finish is second to none. I’d definitely take this over an SLK, Boxster, or a TT any day.

As a side, I’m actually a big fan of Chris Bangle’s work, unlike the author it seems! I’d argue that he brought BMW out of the boxy years and had the guts to design something a bit ahead of its time. I personally think the current 5 series looks like it could’ve just been released. It’s design is that far ahead of its time. He was basically crucified for doing his job TOO well.

Funny how the “mid” level model has 190kw in the straight six. But with two turbos thrown on the top level still “only” has 225kw. There’s a lot of potential there for some decent power. 225kw in something of that size should be a bucketload of fun though.

John, you are right. From the other reviews I have read, they are aiming the Z4 more at the SLK instead of the Boxster, like you said. Leaving room for M division is really quite plausible.

Has BMW moved the Z4 into the SLK class rather than the Boxster class (ie made it softer), so it gives the M Division room too introduce their own hardcore Boxster S chasing version? IMO the twin turbo six is so good that if the Sdrive35i, had Boxster S handling it would make it almost impossible for M division too introduce a substantially better product. BMW has made room for M division now IMO!

Seems to be 2nd best against Boxter ATM….with 3rd being taken by an Audi and the aging SLK 4th. Will be interesting with the new design SLK with twin turbo 280kw coming out mid next year.

Andy, I think Boxsters have a lot of road presence in the right colour. For instance, I think a white one would have a lot of presence. It’s not about looks really, it’s more about the fact that the new Z4 just doesn’t have the razor sharp dynamics of the Boxster. The Boxster really is wonderful to drive and I’m sure this is too but it just seems a bit soft now.

An improvement over the old Z4 definitely. Seen a few round here and they look better in the flesh. Audi slotted a diesel in the TT so when will BMW take diesel seriously enough to slot the 335d in. The performance would wip the arse off a petrol stinker.

TT, Z4, Boxter… wow, rich people are really spoiled for choice. Maybe if I work hard enough, I could afford an MX-5, which costs half as much as this Z4. Even that is a maybe.

I would definitely prefer this to the Boxter. As the reviews have said, this is an inferior car but the styling just gives it so much more road presence than any Porsche would ever command. You may argue that this anonymity is what makes a Porsche desirable but if you’re going to spend 100k+ on a 2 seat sports car, why wouldn’t you want it to stand out?

This car looks heinous. Its the same as the old Z4, but the front has been stomped on by an elephant. Literally, it’s the old one squashed down. Those headlights look foul and the tail is channeling the equally bulbous and foul 6 series. The side profile is a mismatch of different ideas and overall, its just an eyesore. At least the old one had a consistent theme thru the whole car, and was respectable in its attempt. This is trying to blend 3 series, 6 series and old Z4 at once, and it’s an abortion of an attempt.

Epic Fail.

Someone must be punished for this abortion.

I love the look of the new Z4, it is i think the best looking BMW for a long time. I know all the reviews has pointed to the Boxster as the better car, but the current Boxster looks almost identical to the first one launched in 96′, and there’s too many of them around. The new Z4 looks sharper than the Boxster and has the security of a folding metal roof, it makes the SLK looks like a toy with fussy styling, and the TT an expensive VW.
