2015 Volvo XC90 First Edition: 1927 vehicles available via online purchase only

In a nod to Volvo's year of inception, the first 1927 examples of the new 2015 Volvo XC90 will be sold as First Edition models, and can only be purchased using the company's website.

The 2015 Volvo XC90 First Edition will be offered with a choice of all-new four-cylinder drivetrains - a new twin-turbo diesel D5 engine producing 168kW of power and 470Nm of torque, or a supercharged and turbocharged T6 petrol unit with 238kW and 400Nm. Both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and are expected to be sold exclusively with all-wheel drive.

First Edition models have individually numbered plates and rear-end badges, and are only available in Onyx Black paint with eight-spoke, 21-inch alloy wheels. The interior of these limited edition cars is finished in Amber nappa leather trim, with a charcoal leather dashboard and walnut trim highlights.

The front seats feature heating and cooling, while the outboard second-row seats are heated. The third-row chairs are electronically operated.

First Edition models feature a "virtually button free" media system, which features a large, tablet-like interface that houses all of the cars chief interior controls, and - provided a smartphone is hooked up - also has internet app functionality. That screen is teamed to a 1400-watt Bowers & Wilkins stereo with 19 speakers and an "air-ventilated subwoofer", and the sound quality is claimed to be top notch due to "the latest sound processing software, which brings the emotional experience of a world-class live performance into the car".

Volvo claims the new XC90 has "the most comprehensive standard safety package", including two world-first systems: run-off road protection and auto braking at intersections. Volvo is also fitting as standard its City Safety system, which can detect vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in the path of the car before warning the driver and eventually braking the car. Read more about the safety gear offered in the new XC90 here.

The XC90 First Edition comes with electronically adjustable air suspension, with five modes available including one that allows the driver to choose their own presets for comfort.

The 2015 Volvo XC90 First Edition will not only herald a new era for the brand in terms of its design, technology and SUV credentials, but the means of purchase for the car is the start of a global rollout of a new online purchasing platform.

“Those who want to be among the first to own the best SUV in the world have to act fast," said Alain Visser, senior vice president of marketing, sales and customer service for the Volvo Car Group. "The huge interest in the All-New XC90 indicates that the First Edition will sell out quickly.

“We are creating an online ecosystem that simplifies the process of shopping for, buying and owning a Volvo,” Visser said. “We also see the introduction of the all-new XC90 as the perfect platform for introducing a new, outstanding customer experience, which we are rolling out globally.”

The online store at www.volvocars.com will begin selling the First Edition models from midnight September 4, 2014, Australian eastern time.
