2009 Opel Astra spied

While Holden may have put imports of the Astra on hold, the car is still very much alive in other parts of the world with a next generation prototype recently spied in the German Alps.

The new Opel Astra is expected to make its official debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, almost exactly a year after its main German rival - the Volkswagen Golf.

Despite the heavy camouflage, the new profile, front fascia and rear bumper with split tail lights are still visible, along with the new headlight cluster design.

Overall the new car looks somewhat sleeker and more elegant than the current model, with the five-door version set to again receive the sloping roof line and trapezoidal-shaped C-post of its predecessor.

The engine range will be similar to that used in the existing model, but greener engines are due to arrive shortly after the car’s introduction.
