Australian Drivers – Keep Left Please

June 4, 2007 by Alborz Fallah

I recently took part in the WRX experience on the gold coast, and while that was somewhat scary, being in a car with my mother piloting is a whole new experience of fear and panic, it is easily the best guaranteed way to lose 10kg in 2 weeks.

She has never had one single infringement ticket, yet she has had more accidents than Paris Hilton, and of course none were her fault, who ever said slow drivers don’t cause accidents should be sent to Guantanamo Bay for five years.

The back of her car has seen the workshop at least once a year. She likes to slow to a stop at give way signs or roundabouts. She thinks this is the safest way to drive – a small part of me dies every time I witness this – I admit it, I hate my own mother’s driving (thank god she can cook).

Nonetheless, she, like my father is a rating one driver, the cops love her. Now I want to ask the good people at QLD transport – how come there are no “Every K under is a killer” campaigns? Why aren’t slow drivers targeted in police “blitz”?

I’ve personally been in the car with my mother as she has been pulled over for an illegal U-turn, oh but she is always a responsible driver – this was just an accident, lets let her of with a warning this time. Excuse me, but can I get that treatment Mr officer?

Unfortunately not. If you’re under 30 and if you drive a car which has more than 150kWs, the police hate you, well that’s not entirely true, after all without us, who would fund the police ball? Or the new FPV Typhoons? Or the 300C? But lets not forget the Lotus?

I’ve come to the conclusion that given all politicians are the same age as my parents, there must be a secret code, some sort of handshake that says “Look, I know I can’t drive, but I’ve been trying for 30 years, so give me a break”.

I’m from VIC and I don’t think Syd drivers are too bad, they are polite and always let you in, they have to since if u miss ur turn u r screwed, and generally most do the traffic speed which can be faster than the posted limit. In Melb the drivers are all very good road rules wise but they are al very hurried. No Courtesies. They make it their business to close gaps if they see someone wanting to merge. Which is fine since in Melb you just go round the block and your right. Geelong, on the other hand, has some of the WORST drivers I have EVER EVER come across. The categories there are “bad” and “oh my god what are you doing?” Age has nothing to do with it either. Everyone drives half in the bike lane then swerve back and forth across it and the proper lane. Most do around 40ks under the speed limit at ALL times. In Geelong a common misconception is that the police will book you for doing the limit. Green lights are a suggestion in their eyes as are turning lanes. At one particular intersection the “town” has a dedicated left turn lane and a left turn/straight ahead one. The geelongians cannot comprhend both arrows on that second lane and think it is only for straight ahead so will queue for miles in the other one. when I use the left/straight lane more often than not I have to beep someone changing lanes in the turn into me. Roundabouts are another worry for geelongians, you can be sitting behind some who will not go because they can see a car coming about a k away. Despite in vic the rule is not give way to the right but who is there in it first. That is just the beginning but let’s just say ones horn gets a real workout here.

  2. Sam™ says:

DO NOT GO TO SPAIN OR FIJI

although both beutiful countries, the drivers follow instinct, not road rules

  3. alborz says:

Third world countries are the same – they can fit 5 cars in a 2 lane highway, hence when drivers trained there come to Australia, problems ensue

  4. 280ZX says:

Bali’s fantastic as there are no lanes! I go there at least 3 times a year and im still amazed at how people just move when a truck or car is coming towards them its common sense really LOL… Actually ill be there next week and my mate said i can drive his van to our resort. If i dont come back then i must have been hit by a foreigner…

    Cheers

Lol so true, heard alot of stories from a friend who went to India one time, they overtake with millimetres between vehciles.

I agree with the article, its so true, although my dad is a prity decent driver my mum is exactly the same as the authors… she drives so slow, constantly gets the horn, abuse yeld at her etc… yet she has a clean driving record. She isnt a safe driver, she cant control her car under normal conditions let alone adverse ones… thank god she has never been in that kinda situation!

But also so true the left lane thingy, on highways I will do the limit and have to underake people often… or one time this idiot in the left lane that was clear for kms ahead changed lanes into the right lane on a two lane highway…. WTF!!!

Merging is also another great issue, your meant to keep traffic flowing and merging in at 60km/h into 110km/h traffic isnt the way to go! Yet EVERY time I enter the highway (5 days a week) you have people going slow, once it gets near the mvoing traffic all chaos breaks loose as everyone starts braking, speeding up, braking etc to merge or other traffic to let people in. Yet when Im up front and you get up to the limit, its a simple manovuer slotting into traffic like the notches on a zipper!

  6. Aston says:

Alborz, I don’t think it is just slow drivers that cause accidents, what about people who do about 10k’s over in school zones, then end up killing some kid, because they did not have enough time to brake. Or the knobs that speed in wet conditions, their vehicle becomes aqua plane and glides across the freeway into oncoming traffic, seen that happen a few times on my travels. However, I do agree with you that slow drivers cause accidents also, but I think it is more 50/50.

  7. alborz says:

Aston I completely agree, my point here was to shed some light on the issue of slow drivers given just how much publicity “speeding drivers” get.

It is crucial that we examine all problems and not blame high speed for all our failings!

  8. Paul says:

My personal opinion, slow drivers cause more accidents, however they usually aernt fatal ones. Whereas your reckless driver they might not cause stupid crashes like changing lanes into someone which is usually not life threatening, but when they do crash its usually fatally.

So from this perspective there is good reason to blame RECKLESS drivers (not speed… you can be doing under the limit in the wet and its speeding for the conditions or take a corner in a 80km/h zone at 80km/h and lose control etc).

  9. CJ says:

In the Herald Sun this morning there is an article about two teenage boys rolling a 4wd after a 20 minute police chase, one of the boys is fighting for his life. Then there is another article of a women missing a bend on a stretch of road in Warragul and unfortunately dying at the scene. I always read the articles about fatalities on the road here in Melbourne, not because I am a morbid person, more so because I am interested to see the causes of the accidents. The thing that always makes me shake my head when I read it or hear it on the news is this comment “Her death took Victoria’s road toll to 134, three fewer than at the same time last year”, refering to the women is metioned above. Now let’s just think about that for a minute. 3 less than this time last year…. 3… We are now nearly half way through the year, we are yet to get a really wet winter yet and we are 3 less than this time last year. I know that Alborz likes to express his anti speed camera message and I have also read some police officers comments on this site regarding the fact that they believe speed cameras work, but here we are with 3 less fatalities than last this time last year, 3! It is clear that speed cameras ARE NOT deterring people from speeding. Wake up Ms. Nixon and Mr Bracks! We are now living in a country that only thinks about ways to screw more money from taxpayers/ratepayers pockets, whether it be by way of parking or speeding fines. It is about time that we as a nation or state made it clear to these morons in power in our respective states that the cameras need to go and more money invested into driving training.

  10. Sam™ says:

^ unbelievably i , sam goan, notorious street racer and throttle happy driver believe MARKED fixed speed cameras to be deterrent and effective way of reducing the speed related road toll. what happens when you put a sign up saying speed camera up ahead? people slow the hell down, and quickly! is there any other method or technique that can do this? no

sly police radar’s set up at the side of roads are revenue raisers, dont care what anyone says, and in most ccases the very cheeky police that run them put them in blind spots where its easy to get caught

and of course, a defensive driver training course for all drivers. damn im sick of saying that

  11. CJ says:

Sam, well put! When you see a speed camera you slow down and then speed up, so they work to reduce drivers speeding, for all of 5 seconds…. Have a look at the fixed speed camera locations in melbourne, all on freeways, the bulk of them and the beauty is, wait for it…. They NEVER move, so you know where they are and when to speed and when not to speed. Someone in the money driven Government needs to explain to me how this reduces the road toll. There is only one fixed device that has my full support and that is red light cameras.

  12. Paul says:

Lol speed camearas work in the immediate vacinity of the camera itself, which when totalled equates to like 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the entire roads in our states. Personally I think if they want people to slow down, you start making fixed cameras unmarked and not published, I wouldnt want this to happen, but you cannot deny it would reduce speeding! But then this opens a whole new can of worms, because speeding really isnt the cause of alot of fatal accidents.

  13. 280ZX says:

Sam what the hell are you on about? Dont speed and the sleazy police RADAR wont get you! Okay did you get that or shall i say it again DONT SPEED AND THE RADAR WONT GET YOU! And Especially around blind spots! If i was at a blind spot and some tool came flying through it i would kick his ass myself …

  14. Sam™ says:

marked speed cameras are the only way to forcibly slow people down full stop. driver training will do very little. if you lose control of a car at high speed no driver training will save you. so why not put more and more marked speed cameras around? seems fair

Red light cameras are a joke, the only thing they do is cause accidents from idiots slamming on the anchors at a orange light to avoid a ticket and some poor bastard running up behind them in the process!

and stop lying fools, you all speed!

  15. alborz says:

    Thats incorrect Sam,
Driver training does a lot to help High Speed accident avoidance, Knowing how to emergency brake your vehicle from 150km/hr comes in handy!

  16. Pauld says:

Sorry Sam, but it’s obvious that speed cameras are stealth tax collection boxes. The government has no incentive to save lives, but they have every incentive to raise money for pork barrel projects in ’swing’ areas.

  17. Sam™ says:

that is true^ however i see no other way of drastically reducing the speed road toll, thats just my suggestion

alborz – i never said driver training never did anything, very much the contrary, im hugely in favour of driver training, HUGELY but common sense suggests driver training cannot cater for every situation, hell if you somehow got caught unstuck at 150KM/h it would be very difficult for even the most adept of drivers to weave their way out of that one. but yes in short, driver training is primarily whats needed

  18. Alborzs Mum says:

All comments were constructive and have been taken onboard sweetheart….now, get your own dinner tonight ok?? You are quite correct though, I have in fact been let off for something you would have been penalised for. But, by the same token, you young drivers have some very annoying driving habits too. Following too closely, stereos too loud, Texting/talking on those infernal mobile telephones, doing makeup and hair…just to name a few. I’ll move to the left lane when you start tidying your room!
In QLD we talk slow AND drive slow. Before being allowed on QLD roads, people relocating from interstate to sunny QLD should be “re-educated”. Over the past 10 years, the massive increase in southerners to our state, has also seen a detioration in driving etiquette, increase in road rage and the emptying of our dams. Victorians and NSWelshman leave your “attitude” at the border …and BYO water.

  19. HA I think you have been told Alborz.

  20. alborz says:

That is definitely not my mum :D but funny nonetheless

  21. Pauld says:

Sam: The government has set up a strawman argument. They’ve stated that they’d like to reduce the death toll on roads (a reasonable goal) and speed cameras are needed to accomplish this (not true).

If the ’speed kills’ statement from the government was true, half the population of Germany would be dead. The truth is that less than 2% of road fatalities are caused by driving above the set limit (this figure is from the government’s own ‘Queensland Government Parliamentary Travelsafe Committee Study #15′). Unsafe driving, badly maintained roads and cars without safety features (such as ABS) kill. If the government wanted to save lives, they would address these with 1) mandatory driver training courses, 2) better maintained roads (there are potholes on Parramatta Road the size of a bowling ball), and 3) reduced stamp duty (or abolish stamp duty) on cars with safety features (the entry-level Barina in Australia does not contain ABS because of price).

Lobby groups like the RACQ tow the government line and brand anybody who disagree as ‘hoons’.

Saying this, the attitude of the government on road safety is entirely consistent with their attitude on other matters: they present the average punter with a false dichotomy (increased road tolls or speed cameras?) and then take the more politically feasible option (reduced stamp duty for 7.0L/100km hybrids, extra stamp duty for 6.0L/100km diesels).

My opinion of Queensland Transport is so low that they would have to work extremely hard to disappoint me further. QT is filled with complacent bureaucrats who cause the death of drivers through inaction, misuse of facts and lack of leadership.

If I ever unleash a genie from a bottle, my second and third wish will be to disband Queensland Transport and the NSW RTA.

Gosh, I should write for CarAdvice, i’m certainly angry enough :)

  22. Just found this on the Street Fords web site listed today .

The plan to infect NSW with undercover speed vans has been killed off by opposing pressure from the State Government and the Opposition.

The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority have been pushing for plans to use covert speed surveillance vans as a way to reduce the amount of speeding motorists on the road, a theory which the RTA believes will help save lives. While most motorists believe that automated speeding enforcement is not a step in the right direction, is seems finally the government is catching on to the beat of the opposing motorists drum.

Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal has today said that be prefers the use of high visibility measures to slow speeding drivers down, rather than to catch them in the act and then having them realise they were speeding a few weeks down the track.

The Opposition were quick to slam the idea by claiming more highway patrol officers were the answer, with these sneaky revenue tactics being a profitable band-aid fix.

Despite all the negative pressure from the RTA’s proposed sneak tactics, the Pedestrian Council of Australia has backed the idea stating that the idea was revenue raising, but life-saving.

With speed deterrent tactics copping massive pressure everyday of the week by parties claiming all the methods chosen are based upon revenue raising, it seems a more logical approach would be to eliminate the concept of a fine all together and concentrate more on the demerit form of punishment system.

  26. Scott says:

Nothing erks me more than the whole ‘ I’ll sit in the right lane because I’m going as fast as anyone should go.
It’s usually accompanied by the mindset that one second distance is plenty distance’.
There are two posible scenerios (sp?) for our highways. The First which we see everyday in Australia is people sitting in the right lane. The result is (as there will always be a natural variation in driving speeds)cars all being grouped together behind the right hand block. Drivers getting fustrated and driving to close to each other, WHICH IS ANYTHING UNDER TWO SECONDS DISTANCE. Many of these drivers fustrated looking to weave through either on the left or right. Quite often there will be a large part of the highway now free of cars ahead of this ever growing clot. (Forming into a traffic jam given enough time).
The second is everyone keeping left. The result, Cars spreading out over the highway in accordance with peoples natural speed variation. Room to change lane as needed. Always knowing exactly what every other car is going to do – Overtake on the right, return to the left. Speed is not the enemy people. Speed, plus driving to close, not indicating early (really what is the piont of indicating as you change lanes) and not sticking to the correct lane all put together kills. Don’t believe me. Watch any european motorway for five minutes and compare it to our roads.

  27. Glen says:

Ok, Im sick of the way these governments treat road users, considering NSW previous premier didnt have a driver’s license. To me no license means no say.

Anyways how do I get into one of these company’s to change everything. Noone else will do it so I’m going to have to.

    If I was in charge,

Speed Cameras would be moved from safe straight roads to actual black spots (mainly dangerous corners) and be sign posted so people slow down for those black spots.

Speed Limits would be increased on major freeways and multi lane Highways eg. Hume Freeway should be at least 130km/h.

Australian Standards would be enforced on all roads so the RTA doesn’t just reduce speed limits on badly damaged roads instead of fixing them (Bucketts Way in NSW went from 100km/h to 90km/h because road was stuffed)

Aim to have a major Autobarn style road going from Melbourne to Brisbane with 150+kmh lane with strict enforcment for people going too slow in those lanes.

Change licensing so every driver must attend an advanced driving course, not just learn how to reverse park.

Must speak english to be able to drive (I’m not racist but all road signs are in english so if you can’t read roadsigns then your not a safe driver)

Scrap current P-plate car list and design one that allows them to drive a v8 with less power than current family 6-cylinder.

Ummm there is more but elect me to find out :P

  28. macca says:

geelong drivers are the same as drivers everywhere, good and bad. As soon as people start understanding that it’s not their right to drive it’s a privilege and realise that they don’t own the patch of road their car is driving on and learn to share(remember sharing is that thing your parents and teachers taught you when you were young)the easier driving in congested areas willo be.

  29. Green Eggs & Spam says:

I personally think it’s time we fire evry politicion over 50 and bring young fresh and uncorrupted minds (especially the ones that plan the construction of the roads and the rules) can I get an amen brothers?!?!

  30. ShaunL says:

Just for you folks back home, I learnt on the weekend that trucks are not allowed on the road on weekends and on the autobahn/highway all trucks are to stay in the left lanes.

No that is what we should do in Australia. The Germans call trucks hogging both lanes on the highway/road “elephant racing”. How true.

  31. Keepleft, Mot Adv-NSW says:

One needn’t have motorway traffic lanes dedicated to certain speeds, all that is required is adherence to lane discipline, ‘keep left-not middle when on lengths bearing more three or more traffic lanes’.

Another thread here somewhere that also covers this topic, but again, only NSW teaches via its driver handbook (RUH) its pupils how to correctly use traffic lanes on motorway lenghts bearing more than two lanes.

The ongoing development of the National Driver Licensing Scheme, which you can recognise as the adoption of uniform license categories and features (L, P1, P2 – Log books etc) has its emphasis on the ‘defensive driving’ components, this is appropriate.

  32. David says:

Keep left in Australia is a waste of time. We are all restricted to the same speed limit? So whats the issue. Most of our roads are not designed to encourage you to keep left (thats any road from which you can turn right from a right hand lane) in fact you could argue that its plain dangerous to encourage people to travel “faster” in the right lanes of these roads. Keeping left (right) in Europe works really well (yes I lived there and drove there for many years) for a number of reasons . 3+ lane freeways. Trucks restricted to the left lane (middle lane for passing), trucks restricted to a SIGNIFICANTLY different speed limit to cars, drivers much more disciplined than Australians, a somewhat more laissez faire attitude to max posted speed limit, meaning you can pull out and pass a slower car and not worry about getting pinged for speeding. I really don’t get the problem in Aus if your traveling on the speed limit in whichever lane who is going to pass you?

  33. Scott says:

David, who made you the enforcer of the law. You don’t see people pushing you out of the right lane to “enforce the law”. So why are you picking one rule to follow and forcing others to, while at the same time your breaking another law (keep left). Sounds hypocritical to me.
The AUSTRALIAN road rules not only state to keep left it also states that it is illegal to drive in a manner that stops someone from overtaking you.

  34. Ivan says:

    Left Lane or Right Lane:
I would have to agree that the left lane should be the slower one, no question about that. That would particularly apply in the freeway situation, eventhough you’re traveling at the speed limit, try to keep on the left lane unless overtaking. I don’t worry about people giving me the finger if i’m traveling at the right lane and trying to find a spot to move left, while he’s so impatient to put his foot down and see how long he can go before he crashes….

However, I believe that you should be more understanding when traveling at a road that permits right turns. Some driver might stay on the right lane to turn right, he might be driving slower because he’s having difficulties in finding the street name, etc….
I come to understand this as I travel on Albany Hwy every day in Perth.

For slow drivers I think I don’t mind them too much as long as they don’t break the rule. I understand that they are slower to react (especially for the ederly) and therefore need to drive slower. BUT PLEASE KEEP LEFT UNLESS YOU’RE TURNING RIGHT!!!! So annoying, when I see a slow car in front on the right lane, i keep thinking it’s alright, he/she is going to turn right at the traffic light, but no, he’s still going straight after the traffic light….

And another thing, it pisses me off when I see a truck on the right lane at the traffic lights while there is a normal car on the left….why?? you think you can drag the sedan and beat it???

  35. Simon says:

Being a former Driver trainer (Post license) and performing that particular job all over the country these are my own observations.
Queenslanders drive with horse racing blinkers on and are habitual tailgaiters with no obvious clue to the road rules and…it gets worse the further north you go (Mackay has to be the epicentre of scary drivers in this country).
They dont like to keep-left because they are still under the assumption that you have to let drivers in on freeways (not the rule at all as that is the merge rule and not the ‘lane-end’ rule which applies to freeway on-ramps).
The solution is simple Queensland. Accelerate to the speed on the on-ramp and you might be surprised at how easy it is to get onto the motorway…from there stay in that lane until you are either going to overtake or the traffic is heavy enough that the keep left rule is void. Keep left unless over taking is not keep left unless doing the speed limit or close to it.
Big 4-wheel drives and taller vehicles should also be aware that the people behind them can’t see past them (whereas these drivers are able to see over the top of other cars) so they should keep as far left of the lane they are in as well. Also….there is no fog, so turn the bloody fog lights off. They make no difference whatsoever to your vision and in actual fact do nothing but piss other drivers off (Take note 3,6,SS,XR6/8 and all Subaru owners). I could go on…but havent even got to the other states yet…thought I would start with the worst first!

  36. tom says:

MELBOURNE DRIVERS ARE SHIT, THE COPS ARE WORTHLESS PIECES OF CRAP WHO HAVE ROAD RULES FOR THEMSELVES AND THEN THE NORMAL ROAD RULES FOR EVERY ONE ELSE.
I’VE SEEN SO MANY NEAR MISSES DUE TO CARS THAT BLOCK YOUR VIEW WHEN TURNING OUT OF YOUR GARAGE OR DRIVEWAY.
TRUCK DRIVERS ARE FAIRLY GOOD IN GEELONG CONSIDERING THAT PEOPLE IN CARS TRY AND PUT THEM TO FAME. PEOPLE ARE CONSTANTLY SPEEDING AND GOING PAST A COP, ALL THE COP DID WAS SPED UP AND ZOOMED PAST HIM.
LAST WEEK I SAW THIS WOG IN A SKYLINE THAT PULLED OUT OF A STREET THAT WAS LIKE 50 METERS AWAY AND WAS PULLED UP BY A COP SO FUNNY AND IT LOOKED LIKE ALL HE GOT WAS A WARNING. THE COPS IN VICTORIA ARE THE WEAKEST PEOPLE I KNOW WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD RULES.
IM ONLY A PASSENGER COZ IM NOT OLD ENOUGH TOO DRIVE AND THE PEOPLE ESPICIALLY OLDIES AND SOME YOUNG ONES ARE THE WORST ON THE ROAD.

  37. Nicolas says:

About bad drivers…let me say this – it depends what you define as a “bad driver”, and Australians have got it all wrong – it amazes me .. Australians are just so arrogant when it comes to driven…holding ourselves in such high regard.

Let me just say this – Australian drivers are one of the most selfish, spoiled, intolerant and inconsiderate in the world. I’ve driven in Japan, France, Canada, as well as Italy. The Italian drivers do not follow the road rules at all, speed like crazy, and park everywhere (due to the lack of space), BUT in Italy and the other countries I mentioned – road rage is very rare, unlike in Australia where drivers so self-reightous and oblivious to the needs of others.

The Canadians, in my experience, are the best drivers.

E.g. Australian drivers on the freeway (or highways) never slow down for the cars having difficulty merging in, which is idiotic, and a case of bad driving. Sure, the road rules don’t say that you HAVE to slow down for someone having trouble merging in – but it’s common sense and the only proper thing to do. I *always* change to the right lane to let in a driver who is having difficulty getting in. It’s also something called “civilised”, although I doubt Australian drivers can see through their ow arrogance to understand the term.

Another example – many drivers think its their right to beep like crazy at slow drivers. This is another example of true bad driving. If you think the driver in front is slow, deal with a few minutes lost to your life, or overtake when safe. It’s not their responsibility to satisfy your desire to speed (and probably run people over). In any case, the driver is probably from interstate (looking for a street) or elderly (slower reflexes), and that’s why they are driving slow.

I think *one* of the reasons why Australians are so selfish and have a total lack of consideration for other drivers is that we have too much space (in the country), and when we feel our space violated, we go nuts. Well, the space we have is a privilege – be an un-spoiled adult and deal with it. Try living in less prosperous places on the plane where it’s more crowded.

Finally – racism on the road. I’ve heard *a lot* about racism-related road rage from many of my friends. It’s totally appalling. This is one of the worst facets of Australian roads (let alone Australian society).

Australians – take a long hard look in the mirror before holding yourselves in such high regard, and next time you’re about to go psychotic with the horn at a slow driver – THINK, and BE CIVILISED (and not only to those of your own skin colour).

  38. Paulw says:

Sam, HAND IN YOUR LICENCE AND GET YOUR MATES TO DO THE SAME AND THAT WILL MORE THAN LIKELY REDUCE THE ROAD TOLL FOR NEXT YEAR. A fixed speed camera does nothing unless you cant read or choose to run the gauntlet hoping there is no camera in the box. However the sleazy hiden cop with the radar gun will get you and eventualy your licence. The more often you actualy lose points (or your licence) the more chance you will slow down. This is an affective way of reducing road toll. I also agree with driver education. I further more believe that car drivers driving interstate should also have to comply with the same log book rules as bus and truck drivers, fatigue is one of the biggest killers on our roads and it amazes me continuously that a bus or truck driver can only drive 12 hours within in ant 24 hour period. And must have a rest stop for at least 30 mins every 5 hours, however a car driver can drive 72 hours straight if they choose. I once sat in a car with a guy that drove non stop from Mackay in Queensland to Melbourne, this took a terifying 27 hours.

  39. Trudy says:

Sorry mate, NSW drivers are the worst for not keeping left! It is THE largest sign on the roads and yet the most unobeyed. Why don’t the cops target basic road rules that people seem to forget – oh no hang on, seems as though we aren’t even teaching the new drivers how to drive as more P platers are oblivious to most sign posted rules, particularly stop signs, what are they optional to stop at now?

  40. KEV says:

Melbourne drivers are amongst the worst in the WORLD!!!

Every day I am almost run of the road be the terrible drivers here. Solid white lines dont seem to mean a thing!! And as to driving on the left the only time they do that is when there cutting infront of you at the last minute to get off the freeways!! I find it hilarious that the govermant spend so much money on drink driving campaigns when you can jump in the traffic jam on the monash and see plenty of drivers with a beer in there hand!!
And its the same with speeding!! the road speed is slow here in comparison with other countries and still there are plenty of accidents!

As a former HGV driver i think its about time the goverment do something to stop the bad HGV drivers here (in 4yrs i havent seen one drive on the left) in th UK HGV drivers rule the road and help keep the motorways flowing, here they seem to block the freeways!!!!
