Renovo unveils US$529,000 electric coupe

Startup car company Renovo has unveiled its electric coupe ahead of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The Renovo coupe is based on a modified Shelby American CSX9000 chassis and body, which has been fitted with Renovo's own electric drivetrain.

At the back of the long engine bay are twin sequential axial flux electric motors, which together produce over 370kW (500hp) of power and around 1356Nm (that's 1000 foot-pounds in the old money) of torque. According to Renovo, the coupe is able to deliver maximum power within 37 milliseconds and, like other electric cars, all that torque is available immediately.

A single speed transmission delivers the power to the rear wheels, and the car rides on 19-inch alloy wheels clad in 245/35 rubber up front and 295/30 at the rear. Weighing just 1475kg the Renovo coupe is able to race from 0-60mph (96km/h) in a 3.4 seconds; the company claims a top speed of over 190km/h.

Power is stored in a custom-made 740V lithium-ion battery pack. Renovo claims that its coupe can be recharged in five hours from a 240V AC charger or in just 30 minutes from a quick charging unit.

No car is without its downsides, and the Renovo has a few, even on paper. Firstly, range is unexceptional at just 160km. Secondly, the asking price will be an eye-watering US$529,000 before taxes.

Production of the Renovo coupe will begin in 2015, with output limited to under 100 units.
