Proton Savvy replacement to feature six airbags and ESC as standard

The next-generation Proton global city car - which will be the replacement to the Proton Savvy - will boast the full gamut of safety equipment when it launches in late 2014 or early 2015.

Proton's all-new city car - which is currently referred to as P2-30A, though it is expected to revive the Savvy name - has international exports high on its agenda, and as such, safety is a high priority. Reports suggest the new model will be offered with a long standard safety list including six airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, brake assist, anti-lock brakes and hill-hold assist.

For context, the existing Savvy - which was sold here between 2006 and 2011 - had dual front airbags, ABS and rear parking sensors. The new model should, then, be positioned to take on the likes of the Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi Mirage, Honda Jazz and Hyundai i20.

Other safety items said to be available include a reverse-view camera, rear parking sensors, and power windows with anti-pinch function. A touchscreen media system with satellite navigation is set to be offered, as is keyless entry and push-button start.

Engine details remain unclear, but reports state the new model will feature engines developed in-house, and that those powerplants will feature variable valve timing. The car is expected to be sold with a five-speed manual or automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT).

CarAdvice has contacted Proton Australia for comment on the next-generation city car.

Expect the production model to be revealed later this year, likely at the 2014 Paris motor show in October.
