2015 Mazda 2 : $28,000 driveway price revealed in competition fine print

The approximate price of the all-new 2015 Mazda 2 has been inadvertently revealed in the fine print of a competition giving Australians the chance to win one of the first examples of the third-generation city car.

Point 8a in the terms and conditions of the ‘Win an all-new Mazda 2 and a day trip’ promotion lists the value of a “new Mazda 2 petrol hatch automatic” at $28,000.

The fine print explains the price includes “all on-road costs (dealer delivery and statutory charges, 12 months’ registration and stamp duty)” and “accessories as determined by the promoter”, but does not cover “comprehensive insurance or any other accessories not specified”.

The $28,000 driveaway price of the competition car would put its list price at approximately $25,000 (including any options and accessories), suggesting it will likely be the top-spec version of the all-new model.

For most of the current, second-generation model’s life a high-grade Genki variant was available at between $22K-$23K. The competition car is likely to be a successor to this model.

The current line-up tops out at $18,580 for the Maxx Sport auto, though the revised two-variant line-up is reflective of the range now being deep in run-out mode.

A top-spec Mazda 2 would compete with fellow high-end city cars such as the Volkswagen Polo 77TSI Comfortline ($21,740), Honda Jazz VTi-L ($22,490), Ford Fiesta Sport ($22,525), Renault Clio Dynamique ($23,790) and GT ($25,290), and Peugeot 208 Allure ($23,990) and Premium ($26,490).

Mazda Australia public relations manager Steve Maciver told CarAdvice the price in the competition's terms and conditions was an "estimated overall value" of a variant of the new Mazda 2 only. He said head office in Japan was still yet to sign off on final pricing for the Australian market, and said the local division did not plan to talk about pricing until around the time of its launch in late-October and November 1 on-sale date.

The third-generation Mazda 2 is new from the ground up.

The new model, available only as a five-door hatchback, is built on a longer and lighter platform and will be offered with two tunes of a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in Australia – the base model with 79kW and 139Nm, the high-grade potentially with 82kW and 144Nm.

The engine will be available with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

The new city car will be available with Mazda’s MZD Connect infotainment system as well as a number of new safety technologies from its i-Activesense range, such as active cruise control, forward collision prevention, blind-spot warning and lane departure warning systems.

The competition’s grand prize – which comprises the new Mazda 2 and a $1500 ‘day trip pack’ including a $500 fuel voucher, $500 Wotif gift voucher and $500 spending money – will be drawn at 2pm on November 5.

Maciver said the competition had attracted about 14,000 entries in two weeks, with 5000 of those opting in to receive more information about the new Mazda 2 and 1400 asking to be contacted by a dealer when the car goes on sale.
