2015 Mazda MX-5 spied on the road in Japan

The all-new 2015 Mazda MX-5 has been spotted on the road in Japan.

Images of the 2015 MX-5 - which is due to be revealed on September 3/4 in three separate locations around the world - were uploaded to Imgur over the weekend by user meshcount. The images appear to show the car in its production body, with little or no body-disguising cladding fitted to the car.

While it is heavily camouflaged, it is clear the new MX-5 retains the stout proportions of its predecessors, though it instantly appears smaller and more rounded than the model it replaces.

Mazda has stated the new model will look very different to the current version, and the above image highlights some of the styling changes like the sloping bonnet line, while the clamshell windscreen pillar remains. Unfortunately there are no front-on images of the car, but it is expected to offer some elements of the brand's bold Kodo design language.

The new MX-5 is set to lose as much as 100kg over the car it replaces, and Mazda has also confirmed the new model will start below $40,000 when it launches here in mid-2015.

No official details have been made public about what engines will power the new MX-5, though it is expected the car will be offered with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinder engines, as a teaser video from the Japanese brand hints.

Stay tuned for more images and news on the 2015 Mazda MX-5.
