Toyota GT86 CS-R3 rally car unveiled

A rally version of the Toyota 86, the Toyota GT86 CS-R3, will make its public debut at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland that starts on August 21.

The new Toyota GT86 CS-R3 has been under development for the past year by Toyota Motorsport (TMG), but isn't quite ready yet for competitive racing. So, at the Rallye Deutschland, the car will serve as the official "pathfinder" zero car that performs a safety test of each stage, prior to the competitors hitting the track.

Under the hood there's the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine as road-going the Toyota 86. For the CS-R3, the boxer has given new software, revised cam lift, an HJS racing exhaust and altered compression ratio to up power to between 179kW and 186kW. The Toyota 86 that's in showrooms today has 147kW at its disposal.

Power goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission and a configurable limited-slip differential. Other changes include an FIA-compliant roll cage, 75L fuel tank, new wiring loom, Reiger adjustable shock absorbers, shorter final drive, new power steering setup, and roof ventilation.

For tarmac stages the CS-R3 wears 17-inch OZ alloys, while on gravel the car is shod with 16-inch rims. All up the GT86 CS-R3 tips the scales at a regulation 1080kg, down from the road car's 1257kg.

The CS-R3 will be available in kit form from early 2015 and should be priced against other available R3-class cars, although final pricing has yet to be confirmed.
