Aston Martin Lagonda luxury sedan revealed

The new Aston Martin Lagonda sedan will be made available to select buyers in the Middle East by invitation only in 2015.

Just a few days ago we brought you news of the luxury brand's intent to put aside its long-standing plans for a Lagonda SUV model. Now Aston Martin has revealed images and details of its exclusive new sedan model bearing the same name.

The lengthy sedan revives the Lagonda name of the original luxury saloon launched in 1976, and the British brand says the new model will live up to the ideal of being "the finest of fast cars".

No official details have been revealed as to what will make the new model so fast, but there are reports the Lagonda will be powered by the 5.9-litre V12 engine seen in the Rapide S sedan. If there are no changes in terms of engine tune (which we doubt), the new model will offer 410kW of power and 620Nm of torque. It will be rear-drive, and automatic only - likely a six-speed unit from German makers ZF.

The Lagonda will be built upon the existing VH underpinnings, and it will be constructed in the UK at the company's Gaydon plant in the same building that the ultra-exclusive Aston Martin One-77 was made.

According to Aston Martin, the car will only be available to buyers in the Middle East because of that region's "specific market demand", and while pricing is unknown, it will likely be quite exxy. Aston Martin stated the Lagonda's positioning "will be commensurate with the car's exclusivity, quality and luxurious nature" - given it is available only to select buyers, the sky's the limit as to what it could cost.

The original 1976 Lagonda - designed by William Towns - featured a range of technologically advanced elements, including LED displays. The new version is expected to push the boundaries in terms of technical nous, too, with the brand confirming the exterior panels of the sedan will be constructed of lightweight, high-strength carbonfibre.

Aston Martin director of design, Marek Reichman, described the car as a "piece of exceptional automotive art".

"It has been designed and developed entirely in keeping with the spirit and ethos of previous Lagonda super saloons – notably the William Towns Lagonda – and as a tribute to this car it proudly bears the Lagonda nameplate," Reichman said.

Earlier this year there were reports that Aston Martin would dive deep into a parts sharing arrangement with Mercedes-Benz, with suggestions that the Lagonda SUV - among other models - would borrow platforms from the German maker. There's no further word on that at this point in time, though.

However, Autocar UK reports the company recently secured £100 million ($180 million) in funding that may go towards shoring up plans for the high-riding luxury model.
