Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid sets new Nurburgring lap record

The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid has set a new record at the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

Unlike every other brand which touts its cars' lap times around the 'Ring, Toyota claims the plug-in hybrid Prius set a new benchmark for fuel consumption, stating the car used an average of just 0.34 litres per 100km - that's 698 miles per gallon in the old money.

The Japanese company says the Prius plug-in model averaged 40 miles per hour, or 64km/h (above the minimum 60km/h average speed) on its 20.7-kilometre lap of the Nordschliefe, where it contended with other cars and posted a time of 20 minutes and 59 seconds. That's about three times as long as it took the Renault Megane RS275 Trophy-R to do it.

Toyota says the lap was "a first-of-a-kind Nurburgring record", but insists that the plug-in hybrid Prius hatch had "no help from any clever technical tweaks or trick bodywork".

While the Prius Plug-in Hybrid has been available in Europe, the US and Japan for several years, Toyota Australia has never sold the car locally.
