Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Roadster : British brand’s fastest ever drop-top revealed

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Roadster will become the brand's fastest, and fastest-accelerating, series production roadster to date when it launches globally later this year.

Powered by the same naturally aspirated V12 engine found in the V12 Vantage S Coupe revealed last year, Aston Martin claims the V12 Vantage S Roadster will also be its most powerful convertible.

Delivering 421kW at 6750rpm and 620Nm at 5750rpm (510Nm of which is accessible from 1000rpm), the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Roadster claims a 4.1-second 0-100km/h time and a 323km/h top speed – 0.2sec and 7km/h slower than its fixed-lid twin.

Carbon ceramic matrix discs measuring 398mm up front and 360mm in the rear, team with six- and four-piston calipers respectively to ensure the 1745kg drop top can be soundly brought to a halt.

Featuring a seven-speed paddle-shifted transmission – 20kg lighter than the V12 Vantage Roadster's six-speed manual gearbox – the V12 Vantage S Roadster also offers those behind the wheel three driving modes comprising ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’.

The system impacts throttle response, shift speeds and volume from the lightweight One-77-derived exhaust system, plus the car's adaptive dampers, power steering, and stability control and ABS unit.

Again mirroring its hardtop sibling, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Roadster has a carbonfibre grille – available with either black or titanium silver mesh – 10-spoke 19-inch forged alloy wheels and flared wheel arches. The Coupe’s black roof is not an option for obvious reasons.

Inside, options include new-style seat and door trims, lightweight carbonfibre sport seats, black pedals and an interior Carbon Pack that adds carbonfibre to the car’s facia and door pulls.

Further exclusivity will be available through the British marque's bespoke design group Q by Aston Martin.

Aston Martin design director Marek Reichman said the company believes the V12 Vantage S Roadster is not only an exceptional sports car, but one “with the capacity to set pulses racing just by its sound alone”.

"The authentic appeal of its style, performance, quality and craftsmanship ensure its stands head and shoulders above others in its sector and delivers that most precious of experiences – fun – in abundance,” Reichman said.

Expected to start arriving locally in early 2015, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Roadster will start at $418,525, commanding a $29k premium over the $389,300 V12 Vantage S Coupe.
