Mazda MX-5 teaser clip: Roadster sounds like it’s turbocharged

News that the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 will be revealed on September 4 in a worldwide unveiling broke yesterday, and a teaser clip uploaded to YouTube by Mazda USA gives a little bit more away about what can be expected of the new drop-top sports car.

Along with the sound of the car's engine, the clip hints that Mazda may reveal details via social media using the #longlivetheroadster hashtag.

No images or specifications have been officially unveiled about the new model, which was widely tipped to forego any form of forced induction in favour of sticking to the brand's naturally-aspirated Skyactiv engine range. It was expected that a 1.5-litre Skyactiv would be offered in lower-spec models, while a gruntier 2.0-litre Skyactiv with outputs of about 135kW and a reported performance target of 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds would be seen in a top-end version.

The audio captured in the above clip, however, suggests the brand will adopt a four-cylinder turbocharged mill. Given Mazda doesn't currently have a turbo engine in its ranks, there are international rumours the car will share its engine - along with its underpinnings - with the Fiat Abarth drop-top model which has been co-developed with Mazda. CarAdvice understands, however, that this won't be the case.

The new car's chassis has been revealed already, with the company suggesting the all-new version will be smaller than the model it replaces. We already know it will be lighter, with Mazda stating the car will drop 100 kilograms over its predecessor.
