Nissan Vision GT Concept 2020 outed, teases future GT-R

Look beyond the wild curves and proportions of the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo and you will see elements of the design of the next-generation GT-R supercar.

Originally designed for the virtual realm as part of racing game Gran Turismo’s ‘Vision’ project, a full-sized concept of the Concept 2020 was rolled-out at the weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.

As we have reported, the project was created by a team of young designers at Nissan Design Europe in London, but according to Nissan, the model was considered to have enough potential to get input from its ‘advanced engineering team’ based at its Technical Centre in Atsugi, Japan.

Input, says Nissan, that will translate beyond a video game.

Speaking with UK publication Autocar at the weekend’s festival, Nissan design manager Darryl Scriven said the next GT-R naturally remained under wraps, but that “the styling, the shapes, the volumes and the nuances here (on the Concept 2020) are something you will see in the future”.

“There are cues on this car that you can pull from other [Nissan] vehicles. There are also cues that will hint towards 2020.”

The 2017 ‘R36’ GT-R is expected to feature hybrid power and possibly KERS technology co-developed by Nismo and F1 team Williams.

Last year Nissan’s global chief planning officer Andy Palmer said Nissan would almost certainly follow in the wheel-tracks of the Porsche 918 Spyder, LaFerrari and McLaren P1 with its own electrified powertrain for the next-generation GT-R.

Meanwhile Renault Sport F1 told CarAdvice earlier in June that the petrol-electric powertrain know-how used for its Formula One cars this season could be borrowed for a future production performance car — potentially the GT-R from alliance partner Nissan.
