A stripped-down base model version will join the line-up late this year for just US$21,750 (A$31,130).

The third-generation Prius comes with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine producing 73kW which combined with the car’s electric motor can produce a total of 100kW.
The US Prius comes in five trim levels and includes standard safety equipment across the range such as ESP with Traction Control and ABS.

The second model in the range, priced at US$22,750, adds push-button start, a six-speaker stereo system, six-way adjustable driver’s seat and seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag.

The most expensive trim level, at US$28,020 (A$40,103) includes Bluetooth, heated front seats, an eight-speaker JBL system and 17-inch alloy wheels.

  1. Hummerbug says:

This would have to be one of the ugliest cars in the world!Toyboata !

  2. Mitch says:

    a 1.8 making 73kw isnt much.

  3. SteveH says:

I think with only 73 kw from 1.8lt they are aiming for economy rather than performance. I suppose they are relying on the electric motor to make up the difference

  4. RoFlmaTiC says:

I think the poor power / displacement is because the engine runs on the atkinson cycle which uses significantly less fuel.

Honda should be worried given their attempts to undercut the prius with the insight have almost been negated, if that is the actual prius base price.

  5. Captain Mainwaring says:

I’m struggling with how Toyota, the world’s most successful carmaker, has managed to make this new Prius so much uglier than the one it replaces. In no way does this one showcase the technology in the way that its predecessor did on introduction. In fact even the cheaper new Honda Insight looks so much more appealing.

  6. Myke says:

^Our cars cost more than the US most/all of the time, the Prius will probably start around $40k for us.

  7. crusty says:

This is borderline clown car , the front is an abomination , earlier models looked clean and tecky this is sad .

Then again a lot of japanese cars have got this bulky hard edge tank look alah the new nissan maxima ,scuby liberty , accord and maz 6 all trying to be big cars when they are not really

  8. AAA says:

This got to be the most technologically advanced car, at any price.

  9. SamR says:

Come on guys if this car is ugly what is a Suburu Impreza?

It’s an honest attempt at a fuel efficient car. It is not a sports car.

    Is it the answer? No.

Does it get us to the answer sooner? I would say yes.

  10. Ron Flat says:

When your not driving this thing, the Prius’ convenient wedge-shaped proportions make it suitable for use as a door stop.

  11. figjam says:

so “hummerbug” what do you drive a P76! class act mate!

  12. figjam says:

if you think this is ugly what does that make the new kia soul, subaru impreza, nissan tida, nissan micra and holden barina? the prius is a work of art next to these! its all about making the car more fuel efficant!

  13. Cupid Stunt says:

Toyota seemingly continue conning unwary folk about the merits of petrol hybrids. The overall performance and green issues are simply not met by the Prius. That’s exactly why most other manufacturers are not pushing this quite so hard.
    Toyotas biggest green farce!!

  14. Pauly says:

I personally think the new Prius looks more like a normal car (maybe abit more unique and high tech looking), then the current Prius.

The current prius in my mind, seems more like a science expiriment, it never seemed like a finish product in my mind, the overall exterior look left me cold.

The new one though… I dont mind.

But you definitly need those 17″ alloys on it to make it look better. Those standard 15″ plastic things look shocking!

  15. figjam says:

“cupid stunt” you mustn’t get out much, every manufacturer apart from those going bankrupt are looking at hybrid technology as the way of the future in 10 years time every manufacter will have at least 1 hybrid in there range!
