Mercedes-Benz S-Class family to add three new models including Rolls-Royce-rivalling Pullman and Maybach models

This week’s launch of the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe takes the German luxury carmaker’s flagship model range to three variants - but the company has now confirmed there are at least three more to come.

According to Member of the Board of management Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, Professor Dr. Thomas Weber, there are may be even more S-Class models on their way.

“We’ve already got a short wheelbase S-Class and long wheelbase S-Class on the market. Now the Coupe is on the market and three others will come," confirmed Dr Weber.

The next most likely addition to the S-Class family is an extended version, followed by a convertible and an all-new Pullman model that would sit at the top of the model range.

Weber also believes that there is still a lot of value in the now defunct Maybach brand and cited the success of high-end English carmaker Rolls-Royce as a potential target.

“There’s still a good brand image link to Maybach and it’s something we are still discussing.

“At least when I compare the Rolls-Royce with the technology and luxury we have on board, we don’t fear Rolls-Royce or any other brand," added Dr. Weber.

Daimler AG announced in November 2011 that Maybach would cease to be a brand by 2013 and manufactured the last Maybach vehicle in December 2012. The shutdown was due to poor sales, with only 3000 cars sold since the brand's revival in 2002.

The decision follows almost a decade of trying to make Maybach a profitable rival to BMW-owned Rolls Royce and Volkswagen-owned Bentley models.
