2015 Ford Edge : Territory replacement revealed

The Ford Edge that will essentially replace the locally-built Ford Territory from 2017 will be the blue oval brand’s most advanced SUV yet.

Ford has revealed the production version of the new Edge that was previewed in concept form at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show.

Technology for the 2015 Ford Edge will include the company's new adaptive steering system that constantly changes its ratio to make parking manoeuvres easier and higher-speed driving more precise, a split-view 180-degree front camera, next-generation semi-automatic parking system, and a glovebox door that can act as an airbag.

Advanced petrol engines combining turbocharging and direct fuel injection are also available as the choice of powerplant for the new engine, in both 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre configurations.

The 2.0-litre with about 183kW of power and 366Nm of torque features stop start while the 2.7-litre version gains Active Noise Cancellation that uses three microphones throughout the cabin to improve the quality of the engine note entering the interior.

In North America - where the car will go on sale in 2015 - the Edge will have a 3.5-litre V6 available, while in Europe – and presumably Australia – the option of 2.0-litre turbo diesel power will also be available.

All engines are teamed with a six-speed auto that includes paddleshift facility, sending engine power to the front wheels – or all wheels if the AWD version is taken.

The Ford Edge full-time all-wheel-drive system uses an electronically controlled clutch to automatically distribute torque between the front and rear axles by up to 100 per cent in each direction.

Ford says its has reduced NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels in the second-generation Edge that will replace the original, US-only model sold since 2006.

The improvements for the Edge, which is based on the underpinnings of the new Ford Mondeo/Fusion medium car, are helped by a stiffer body constructed from a higher percentage of high-strength steel.

The most dynamic version is called the Ford Edge Sport, which uses the 2.7-litre turbo engine capable of 224kW of power, also features thicker springs and larger, monotube rear dampers to enhance its roadholding abilities.

Curve Control is also available on the Edge, a feature that can brake individual wheels to help keep the vehicle on track around a corner.

The five-seater Ford Edge’s available equipment also includes inflatable rear seatbelts (as first seen in the Mondeo/Fusion), radar cruise control, blind spot assist, and a tailgate that can be opened by aiming a kick under the rear bumper (as first seen on the Kuga SUV).

The Edge will sit above both the Kuga and Ford’s smaller, sub-compact SUV, the EcoSport. Ford Australia will be able to offer a seven-seat SUV to further compensate with the loss of the Territory with the Ranger-based Everest that was previewed in concept form in 2013 and is currently in development.

Ford will build its latest SUV in Canada, with sales starting in North America and Europe in 2015.

Ford Australia is due to close its local manufacturing operations in October 2016, after which the Edge is set to replace the Falcon-based Territory. It’s not yet clear whether the local outpost will retain the Territory name, which has become an established nameplate here, or adopt the Edge name that will be used in almost all other markets.
