Baby Rolls-Royce officially named the Ghost

Rolls-Royce CEO, Tom Purves, has announced the official name for the brand's newest model at the Shanghai motor show, as the baby Rolls continues its showcase tour around the world.

Over its short lifespan the new model has been known by many names, making its public debut as the 200EX in concept form, then as the RR4 in production trim - and now it has been given its official name, the Rolls Royce Ghost.

From late 2009, the new Ghost will join the rest of the supernatural-themed Rolls-Royce range comprising the Phantom, Phantom Extended Wheelbase, Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CEO, Tom Purves, said, “We are delighted to formally announce the Rolls-Royce Ghost. It is one of the most revered names in the automotive industry, evoking images of adventure and technical innovation. The name reflects this new model’s breadth of abilities.

"The first cars to bear the Ghost name were known not only for impressive dependability and refinement but also great flair and style. This car will be the first in a new generation of models to carry this evocative name and will give us two pinnacle product lines – Phantom and Ghost.

Rolls-Royce has prepared for the new arrival by expanding its manufacturing facility at Goodwood where the Ghost will be built on its own dedicated production line but will share paint, wood and leather workshops with the Phantom series of cars.

Since the Phantom was first launched in 2003, Rolls-Royce has experienced five years of continued growth, so far peaking in 2008 with annual global sales of 1,212 cars representing a 20 per cent increase over the previous year.
