Ford FPV GT F: 351kW supercharged V8 sedan launched

The highly anticipated Ford FPV GT F has been officially launched at Ford’s You Yangs proving ground in Victoria.

The limited edition GT F 351 is the most powerful sedan ever produced by Ford Australia and is powered by a 351 kilowatt supercharged V8 engine that also develops 570Nm of torque from 2,500 – 5,500rpm.

It’s also the last FPV vehicle that will ever be produced.

The GT F’s precise 351kW output pays homage to the legendary Ford Falcon 351 GT muscle cars from the late 1960s and early 1970s like the XY falcon GT and GTHO Phase 111, which used the iconic 351 cubic-inch (5.8-litre) V8 engine.

“Our goal was to create the best vehicle we could; a vehicle that pays respect to Ford GTs of old yet celebrates all that is good about Ford’s performance credentials,” said FPV chief program engineer Peter de Leur.

Ford claims that apart from the 351kW of power, the V8 engine in the GT F has an overboost function that will deliver 15 per cent more power (around 52kW) “all day long” under the right conditions. However, if the ambient temperature is high, it will be limited to 15-20 seconds at a time to protect the engine.

The GT F’s power curve has been calculated to deliver a very noticeable feel to the car’s performance.

“This is delivered in every gear above 4000rpm, other than first gear,” de Leur said. “When we started this program we had the opportunity to look at a performance increase for the engine so we developed a strategy around the calibration that allowed for a performance upgrade without impacting the all-round drivability of the car.”

The GT F also gets rear camber bolt adjustment on the rear suspension so it can be adjusted for track days.

Just 500 of the Ford FPV GT F sedans will be built for the Australian market, and according to Ford almost all have been accounted for. Ford will also build with an additional 50 cars for New Zealand.

Each car will wear an individual build number, with many of those already reserved by collectors and Ford enthusiasts.

As the covers came off today, Ford also revealed for the first time the GTF’s unique ‘blacked out’ bonnet, which harks back to the original black-striped GTs.

The distinct striping extends over the roof and boot lid, while the rear wing is completely black.

Also revealed was the model’s ‘stealth’ exterior striping package, as well as gloss black accents under the headlamps, grilles, door handles, mirrors and rear diffuser, ensuring a lasting uniqueness from previous models.

Symbolic, too, is the ‘GT orange’ detailing on the celebratory FPV, which is used on the car’s unique ‘351’ badging, instrument dial faces, seat stitching and embroidery, build number and transmission plaquette and the ICC start-up screen.

Ford has also announced that FPV GT F owners will be able to purchase a tailored car cover in dark grey, with model logo and stripe print.

Alongside the sedan, the company will build a final run of 120 FPV Pursuit Utes that are powered by a 315kW version of the same supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine in the GT F.

The limited edition FPV ute incorporates a number of GT F-style features including the bonnet/roof/boot lid black out.

Announced previously on CarAdvice, the GT F 351 sedan is priced from $77,990, with the FPV V8 Pursuit Ute starting at $52,990.
