2015 BMW X6 : Photos of second-generation SUV leaked

What seem to be low-resolution versions of official press photos for the next-generation BMW X6 have leaked onto the internet.

These photos show that the second generation of BMW's "sports activity coupe" will sport an evolutionary style update. While the new car's basic shape is carried over from the original, it has been melded with BMW's latest styling tropes, including headlights that blend into the company's dual kidney grille.

There's also a diving character line, similar to the one in the smaller X4 "coupe", that serves to highlight the rear wheel arch.

Underneath the X6's aggressively styled skin lie the oily bits driving the third-generation X5. As such, the new X6 will feature most of the X5's drivetrain options.

At launch you can expect to see the 225kW/400Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six powering the xDrive35i, a 330kW/650Nm 4.4-litre turbo V8 in the xDrive50i and the 190kW/560Nm 3.0-litre turbo diesel in the xDrive30d. A more powerful M version will appear further down the track, while rear-wheel-drive sDrive variants are likely to appear as well.

As with the car's underpinnings, the X6's interior is shared largely with the X5 on which it's based.

This includes a 10.25-inch high resolution screen rising out of the car's dash. Connected to the company's iDrive controller, it's responsible for displaying the satellite navigation, entertainment, car configuration and smartphone connectivity systems.

Top shelf X6 models will feature a Bang & Olufsen sound system complete with aluminium speaker grilles and a central speaker that rises elegantly out of the top of the dashboard. The X5's Bang & Olufsen system is equipped with 16 speakers, including two subwoofers, and a 1200-watt amplifier.

The rear bench is a split-folding affair that can seat up to three people, but the swooping roof line is again likely to make headroom tight for taller passengers.

Like the current X6, the new car will be built at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, which also produces the X3, X4 and X5.

The new X6 will go on sale in the States in the second half of 2014, but won't be available in Australia until 2015.
