Fiat to offer its own version of Mitsubishi Triton in 2016 – report

The new-generation Mitsubishi Triton due to debut later this year will also be sold as a Fiat in Europe and Latin America, according to reports out of Europe.

The all-new Mitsubishi Triton has been confirmed for a 2014 debut ahead of its arrival in Australia in 2015, and Automotive News Europe claims sources have said the Japanese maker will provide its new ute to Fiat in select markets, with styling and specification modifications expected. Below is an image of the Mitsubishi GR-HEV concept, which is the precursor to the production version of the new Triton.

The new ute will be Fiat's first body-on-frame pick-up, and will be offered by the Italian company's commercial vehicles division Fiat Professional, which also offers the Ducato, Doblo and Scudo vans. Fiat Professional currently offers a single-cab, two-wheel-drive ute known as the Strada in some markets, which was the company's biggest selling model in 2013 (134,000 units sold worldwide).

The expansion of the Fiat Professional range is key to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne's ambitious plans for the group of brands. Indeed, Marchionne first mooted the idea of a four-wheel-drive one-tonne pick-up in 2006, and the model - which was to share its underpinnings with the Indian-made Tata Xenon - was supposed to be on sale in 2008.

The new-generation Mitsubishi Triton has been confirmed to be sold initially with diesel engines, though a petrol hybrid is set to join the line-up in 2016. It's unclear what engines would be offered in the Fiat model, should it eventuate.

CarAdvice has contacted Fiat Chrysler Australia for comment on the possibility of the Fiat ute being sold here.
