2015 Volkswagen Passat will be smaller, lighter, more efficient and packed with tech

The lighter, more fuel efficient and technology-packed all-new Volkswagen Passat will be unveiled in around five weeks’ time.

Sedan and wagon body styles of the eighth-generation Passat will be revealed online in early July before debuting publicly at October’s Paris motor show and going on sale in right-hand-drive markets in early 2015.

The new Volkswagen Passat – teased in these design sketches released late last week – will be up to 85 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces thanks to the use of high-strength, hot-formed steel and aluminium body parts.

Its exterior dimensions will also be marginally smaller than those of its predecessor, though Volkswagen promises more interior space including legroom and headroom and increased cargo space.

The German car maker says it expects fuel efficiency improvements of up to 20 per cent from the Passat’s range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

Headlining the ‘B8’ Passat line-up is the new 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel, which will produce 177kW of power and 500Nm of torque from 1750rpm. Volkswagen says the engine will be paired exclusively with a new seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive.

A plug-in hybrid Passat will also be offered, claiming a 50km pure-electric range and a potential maximum range of around 966km.

LED tail-lights will be standard, while the optional LED headlights will be available with an automatic anti-dazzle high-beam function dubbed dynamic light assist.

Other advanced technology features include side assist with rear traffic alert, traffic jam assist, emergency assist auto braking, and front assist with city emergency braking and pedestrian detection.

On-board, the new Passat gains the configurable and interactive 12.3-inch Active Info Display digital instrument cluster, head-up display, modular infotainment system with application functionality, 360-degree Area View camera system, and the latest generation of Volkswagen’s automatic Park Assist.

Volkswagen also claims a world first with its new Trailer Assist feature, which provides assistance when reversing the Passat with a trailer attached, without the need for any modification or adaption of the trailer.

The all-new Volkswagen Passat will go on sale in Australia in 2015.
