2014 Porsche Macan : Pricing and specifications

The much-anticipated 2014 Porsche Macan SUV launches in Australia this week to become the most affordable Porsche model to date.

With a starting price of $84,900, the Audi Q5-based Macan will take the leadership in the compact SUV segment not just in terms of performance, but also price, with the range-topping Porsche Macan Turbo starting from $122,900.

Sharing the same platform as the Q5, the Audi’s 2807mm wheelbase remains intact, though the Macan is uprated all-around, being longer (by 53mm), wider (by 25mm) and lower (by 31mm).

Porsche says it has taken plenty of design elements from the 911 and the supercar-destroying 918 Spyder for the Macan (particularly when viewed side-on), but perhaps its most obvious resemblance is to its best-selling bigger brother, the Porsche Cayenne.

Porsche Australia no doubt hopes to replicate the Cayenne’s success (the SUV has been the biggest selling model for the brand every year since 2008), launching the Macan range with the Macan S Diesel, Macan S and Macan Turbo. There are currently no plans to import future models with smaller four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines.

The Macan S Diesel is powered by an Audi designed 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel that pumps out a healthy 190kW of power (4000-4250rpm) and 580Nm of torque (1750-2500rpm) - even more than the Turbo.

Porsche claims acceleration times of 6.3 seconds to 100km/h with fuel consumption ranging between 6.1 to 6.3L/100km depending on the tyres fitted.

As the starting point in the Macan range, the S Diesel undercuts the Macan S by $2,300, offering buyers a choice of performance and fuel economy unrivalled in its segment. The cost savings are achieved thanks to its lower fuel consumption (under 7L/100km) that brings up its luxury car tax threshold from $60,316 to $75,375 (2013-14 financial year).

Nonetheless, the moderately more expensive $87,200 Porsche Macan S presents the middle range of the Macan offerings, with its Porsche-developed twin-turbo petrol V6 generating a well-rounded 250kW of power (5500-6500rpm) and 460Nm of torque (1450-5000rpm).

It beats the diesel to 100km/h by 0.9 of a second (5.4) but sips 8.7-9.0L/100km (depending on tyres).

For those that must have the best, the Porsche Macan Turbo demands a further $35,700 on top of the Macan S but delivers its value with a 3.6-litre V6 twin-turbo pumping out 294kW (6000rpm) and 550Nm (1350-4500rpm).

It offers a sports car-like sprint time of 4.8 seconds from 0-100km/h, while staying relatively close to the Macan S for fuel economy at 8.9-9.2L/100km depending on tyres.

All three variants can be optioned with the Sport Chrono package, which will enable launch control and a tighter relationship between the engine, chassis and transmission, cutting the 0-100km/h time by 0.2 of a second.

Standard wheel and tyre size for the Macan S diesel and Macan S measure 235/55 R 19 (front) and 255/50 R 19 (rear) while the Macan Turbo features 265/45 R 20 (front) and 295/40 R 20 (rear).

There are six sets of optional wheels ranging from 18- to 21-inches in size with the maximum tyre size measuring a broad 265 mm wide on the front axle and 295 mm wide on the rear.

Stopping power is offered up via six-piston fixed-calliper brakes with aluminium mono-bloc brake callipers. The Macan S and the Macan S Diesel make do with 350mm front and 330mm rear diameter brake discs while the Turbo ups the ante with 360mm front and 356mm rear discs. Carbon ceramic brakes can be optioned on all models.

The Macan takes the same electro-mechanical power steering system as the 911, out-classing the Cayenne's electro-hydraulic system. In typical Porsche fashion, the company even offers up an optional power steering plus system for enhanced steering response.

Three chassis versions will be available, with the Macan S Diesel and Macan S available with a steel chassis and suspension system (not available in Australia). The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) shock absorber adjustment system adds the ability to regulate damper force on the front and rear axle by measuring lateral acceleration, steering angle, brake pressure and engine torque. It's standard on the two entry S models.

The third option is the air suspension package (standard on Macan Turbo) , which includes a levelling system, height adjustment and PASM. As the most comprehensive package, the air suspension allows for better on and off-road driving with a height adjustment feature that brings the Macan’s ground clearance to a high of 230mm (at speeds below 80km/h) and a low of 180mm depending on requirements.

One of the nifty features of the system is the ability to lower the suspension by a decent 50mm for easier boot access. The “loading level” feature, which has been available in other Volkswagen Group vehicles but is new to Porsche, is activated via a simple button in the 500L capacity luggage compartment (up to 1500L with rear seats folded flat).

The all-leather interior boasts a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with USB and Bluetooth connectivity that delivers 235 watts of sound output via its 11 speaker system. A 14-speaker Bose system is standard on Turbo and optional for S and S Diesel.

A 4.8-inch VGA multifunction display is contained in the right-hand dial and serves as an on board computer. Numerous options are available for interior customisation.

The first set of 150 Porsche Macans heading to Australia are all optioned with the Porsche Sport Pack which consists of roof rails, side skirts, Sport Chrono pack, 20-inch alloy wheels (21s on Turbo), panoramic roof, and brushed-metallic interior trim.

Those wanting to get their hands on a Macan urgently will see prices for Sport Pack versions rise to $98,270 for the S Diesel, $100,560 for the S, and $134,740 for the Turbo.
