Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster : 375kW/665Nm supercar headed for Wörthersee

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo is literally a video game fantasy come to life.

Despite being designed specially for the two-dimensional world of the new Gran Turismo PlayStation racing game, the hot-hatch-inspired supercar will debut in the flesh at next week’s Wörthersee Festival in Austria.

Though difficult to fathom, the GTI Roadster is even more extreme than the Volkswagen Golf-based Design Vision GTI concept that appeared at last year’s Wörthersee event.

The Gran Turismo model borrows that car’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, though pushes out an extra 5kW and 105Nm for peak outputs of 375kW of power and 665Nm of torque – figures that humble the V12-powered Aston Martin DB9 (380kW/600Nm).

Volkswagen has not released specific performance claims, but says the GTI Roadster is “ferociously fast”.

Its seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels via Volkswagen’s 4Motion system.

A front splitter, integrated rear diffuser and giant rear wing are designed to deliver racecar levels of downforce, while 20-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile rubber and 15-inch front and 14-inch rear vented disc brakes provide grip and stopping power.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo will debut on May 28 alongside the Golf GTI Performance concept and other one-off creations from sister companies Audi, Seat and Skoda.
