maybe the amount of vehicles on the road and number of people with a drivers licence should be included in the ratio. To compare us with the netherlands where more than half the population don’t hold a drivers licence and most don’t own a car and public transport is the norm to Australia is a bit silly. I don’t know one adult who doesn’t drive here.

Very true. Add to your comments though that many of the countries showing ‘better’ than Australia in the per population data are so conjested and small, that many dont drive, but catch public transport and when they do drive, the roads they use are either multi-lane highways or congested small low speed roads. The distances travelled are also much smaller.

It’s a numbers game. The more time you spend on the road, the higher the chance of having an accident.

Fact still remains, if the speed is lower, the probability of death in a collision is also lower.

None of these comments comprehend that statisitics make human lives cheap. A vehicle driven at say 60kmh contains far more kinetic energy then a barrage of bullets. Yet we accept deaths from cars, 1,400 a year without a blink an eye as they are swept under the carpet of “accidents” – an absolute joke when you witness agressive driving behaviour and hooning around and the subsequent tears and beatification when it all goes wrong.
