Porsche Cayenne coupe to rival X6, MLC from 2018 – report

A sportier Porsche Cayenne with coupe-inspired styling is allegedly under consideration to join the next-generation luxury SUV line-up from 2018.

Autocar reports design proposals for the ‘Cayenne coupe’ are at an “advanced phase”, and quotes a senior Porsche official who says the brand has been “considering launching a more sporting derivative of the Cayenne for some time now”.

The five-door crossover coupe model would be positioned above the regular Cayenne and would rival the likes of the BMW X6 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz MLC-Class SUVs with muscular styling, a shallow glasshouse and a heavily raked roofline.

Autocar reports the new model would be built on a new version of the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform that is currently under development by Audi, and would be powered by a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The coupe variants are expected to carry a 15-20 per cent price premium over their SUV equivalents.

One consideration believed to be standing between the Cayenne coupe and the production line is the brand’s desire to protect the exclusivity of its Boxster, Cayman and 911 sports cars, though at this stage it’s understood the new model is more likely than not to get the green light.

Another limiting factor has been capacity at the Cayenne’s production plant in Leipzig, Germany, though additional investment in the facility is set to increase capacity to a level that would create space for the new model line.
