BMW X4 priced from $69,900

The BMW X4 will arrive in Australia in July with a $69,900 starting price.

BMW Australia’s four-tier X4 line-up will mirror that of the X3 on which it’s based, with the coupe-inspired crossover to command a premium of between $9000 and $10,500 over its more conventionally styled mid-sized SUV sibling.

But BMW insists the X4 matches the X3 for value, claiming each X4 variant includes more than $9000 of extra features over its equivalent X3.

Standard in the BMW X4 are the Performance Control and variable sports steering systems, which aim to provide dynamic cornering and handling ability and high levels of grip, directional stability and steering precision and comfort.

Also standard in the X4 xDrive20i and xDrive20d variants are 19-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, reverse-view camera, automatic tailgate, dual-zone climate control, cruise control with braking function, leather upholstery with electric front sports seats and driver’s memory function, and a leather sports steering wheel with shift paddles.

The standard infotainment package centres around the Navigation Professional system that incorporates an 8.8-inch screen, 20GB hard drive, USB input, Bluetooth with audio streaming, voice control, intelligent emergency call function and Teleservices features.

The X4 xDrive30d adds Dynamic Damper Control, 360-degree Surround View camera system, anti-dazzle exterior rear-view mirrors, dual round exhaust outlets, and a nine-speaker premium audio system.

The flagship X4 xDrive35i is uniquely equipped with 20-inch M alloys and M aerodynamics package, Sport suspension settings for the Dynamic Damper Control, comfort access with keyless entry, leather M steering wheel, black roof liner, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The xDrive20i is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 135kW of power and 270Nm of torque. BMW claims 0-100km/h acceleration of 8.1 seconds and combined cycle fuel consumption of 7.2 litres per 100km.

The xDrive20d gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel with 140kW and 400Nm. It uses 5.2L/100km combined and claims an 8.0-second 0-100km/h sprint.

The xDrive30d’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel produces 190kW and 560Nm, hits triple figures in 5.8 seconds and uses 5.9L/100km on the combined cycle, and the xDrive35i it fitted with a 225kW/400Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo petrol engine that stops the clock in a claimed 5.5sec and consumes 8.3L/100km combined.

Despite its distinctive styling, the 4671mm BMW X4 is only 23mm longer than the X3 and has a roofline that sits 36mm closer to the ground. The duo share their 1881mm width and 2810mm wheelbase.

The X4 has two individual coupe-style rear seats but also features a centre seat for a fifth passenger. The seats fold 40:20:40 to expand the boot from 500 litres to 1400L – down slightly on the X3’s 550-1600L capacity.

2014 BMW X4 manufacturer’s list pricing:

  • xDrive20i $69,900
  • xDrive20d $73,400
  • xDrive30d $83,900
  • xDrive35i $87,900
